Notizen zu dieser Person

Oldendorp. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ JOHANNES OLDENDORP was born at Hamburg about 1480, son of Hans and Beke. He had the considerable advantage of becoming the protege of his wealthy uncle, Albert Krantz, who encouraged him to study Latin and Greek, and subsidized his university studies. He attended the University of Rostock in 1504, followed by studies in Cologne. From 1508 to 1515, he attended the University of Bologna, the leading university of the time, where the sons of wealthy Germans often studied. He then registered at the noted University of Greifswald, on the Baltic, in 1515. He received a Doctorate in Secular and Canon Law there in 1518. On his graduation day, he married Sophie Lotz. Johannes, like his uncle, had been a devout Catholic. However, during this period he turned toward the teachings of Martin Luther, and became an active advocate of Lutheran Protestantism. In 1526, he returned to Rostock as a Syndic for the city, meaning one chosen to represent and transact business for the city. In 1531, he became a Professor at the University of Rostock. Some of his early writings from this period, "What is Right and Fair" (1529) and "The Councilman's Mirror" (1530), were published in abbreviated form in modern times. From 1534 to 1536, he was a Syndic of the city of Liibeck. At this time, he separated from his wife. It is not known whether he applied for a divorce, as he was married as a Catholic. Oldendorf genealogist Ria Martin says that he probably had Martin Luther or Count Philipp the Magnanimous, Landgrave of Hesse and champion of the Reformation, to declare his first marriage void. Anyway, he married a second wife, ANNA . Count Philipp asked Professor Oldendorp, who had achieved considerable fame, to teach at the University of Marburg, which the Count had founded. It was the first Protestant university in Germany, which now has the largest library. Professor Oldendorp taught there from 1540 to 1542. He was then briefly in Cologne, which he left because of religious controversy. He returned to Marburg, where he was active from 1543 to 1567. He was an adviser to the Count, Dean of the Law faculty, several times Dean of the University, and in 1553 became reformer of the university. He also assisted Philipp the Magnanimous in establishing the Reformation in Hesse, and was instrumental in shaping the term "natural right" in the Lutheran Protestant sense. His contemporaries described him as "one of the most important German jurists of the middle 16th century." One of his portraits bears the inscription "Great Oldendorp, you, who during your lifetime were a refuge of the law, even now are a harbor and glimmer of hope of the Roman administration of justice." His inheritance from his uncle, Albert Krantz, had made him a rich man, who owned houses and land. He died at Marburg, 3 June 1567. I am told his portrait still hangs at the university. I didn't have time to look for it when I was there, as I was too busy exploring the extremely picturesque city. Dominating from its height is Marburg Castle, which was the residence of the Margraves of Hesse. The oldest university building overlooks the Lahn River. Q: Ralph Kleymeyer
