Christoph owned a small grocery before starting up his moving and storage
business. It was quite a large place encompassing a whole city block in
Manhattan. His business Astor Place Moving and Storage did very well and
his son William (Wilhelm) also worked for him.
Christoph went by the name William also as the story goes he did not like
the name Christoph so simply did not use it. Christoph died in 1945 at home.
They lived on the top floor of the business which was I believe 4 stories.
After he died the city bought most of the buildings around that area.
Now they are all brick apartment houses. Sad that there were no photos of the
building. My mother-in-law said it was a good thing that Christoph had died
as it would have broken his heart to see the city buy up all that property
(for little or nothing) and tear everything down.
Christoph is buried in All Faiths Lutheran Cemetery, Middle Village, New
York. His wives are buried there also, as well as several of his children.
