COLUMBIA CITY MAN TAKES HIS OWN LIFE

George Aultom Hangs Himself Back of His Home on North Oak Street-Funeral Rites Will be Tomorrow Afternoon

Coroner E.A. Hershey of Churubusco yesterday afternoon returned a verdict of suicide by hanging in the death of George Aultom, past 78 years old, who was found dead back of his home on North Oak Street in Columbia City at 10:15 Saturday night.

Despondency because of ill health was attributed as motive for the suicide. Mr. Aultom had remarked last spring when he planted potatoes that he would not be here to harvest them.

During the evening Mr. Aultom’s housekeeper, Verna Grimm, left the house and walked to the home of a friend, Mrs. Ellen Shaffer, on East Ellsworth Street. She visited a little while and then returned home. When she returned home about 11:30 lights were on in the house, but Mr. Aultom was not there.

City police were notified and Nelson Winebrenner and Robert Cullimore and Sheriff Fremont Fisher responded. The officers made a search and saw the body of Aultom hanging from the limb of a tree. He was dressed in white and easily seen.

Mr. Aultom had taken a hog hook and rope and attached the hook to a branch of an apple tree. He then had obtained a step ladder, made a square knot of the rope, placed it around his neck and stepped off the second rung of the ladder. The body was found about 12:15 midnight and Coroner Hershey fixed the time of death as about two hours earlier.

George Aultom was born in Jefferson Township, Whitley County, on February 22, 1866, and spent his entire life in the county. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Aultom.

In 1895 he was united in marriage to Sarah Boyd of Union Township, who died in 1910. A daughter, Mrs. Mary Stottlemyer of Fort Wayne, a grandson, Charles Londt, stationed with the U.S. Navy in Algiers, a granddaughter, Mrs. Gale Clark, Fort Sumner, New Mexico, and a brother, Samuel Aultom, of Roanoke, survive. Three brothers and one sister are dead.

The body was brought to the J.A. DeMoney Funeral Home where friends may call and where funeral services will be held at 1:30 o’clock Tuesday afternoon. The Rev. Marion Shroyer, pastor of the First Church of God, will conduct the services and burial will be in the Compton cemetery. (email -Judy G 13/2/06)
