Enlisted as a private 1 Nov 1862 and served with Company K, 8th Regiment, Maryland Infantry. He mustered out on 3 Aug 1863. He was pensioned.

William Hastings Rockey, my Great-Great Grandfather, was born in Lancaster County, Pa, but as a young man he moved (along with 2 of his brothers) to Pleasantville, Md in the late 1840's. William, Samuel & Christian Rockey worked as fan makers, according to the 1850 census. In 1852, William married Sarah Stamm, also from Lancaster County. They raised 3 children (James W. Rockey, Mary Ella Rockey Walker, and Charles F. Rockey) at their Pleasantville home. By 1860, William opened a cabinetmaker's shop where he made and repaired wooden furniture. William Rockey could inlay and carve wood into beautiful patterns with different colored woods. His grain fans were celebrated all over the country. Described as a "small man, very active and quick on his feet", William Rockey built many fine houses and barns in the community. At age 37, William was drafted into the Eighth Maryland Infantry Regiment, Co. K, one of the home guard regiments that protected Baltimore. He later recalled to family members that the cape of his military uniform was stiffened by freezing rain when he had guard duty in the winter of 1862-1863. After the war he was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic, a fraternal support organization for veteran Union soldiers. William and Sarah Rockey are buried at Friendship Methodist (now Fallston U. M. Church) where they were members for over 60 years.
