Pvt Leonard Rockey was born about 1839 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He was the youngest (9th) child of Samuel and Patience Bower Rockey. They owned a farm just southeast of the city of Lancaster. The 1860 census shows that 19 year-old Leonard lived on his parents' farm and worked as a coach maker. When the Civil War began, Leonard was 22 and enlisted as a private in the 79th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment, Company G, on September 14, 1861, at Lancaster. Leonard's regiment saw action in Kentucky and Tennessee. In December 1861, they were ordered to reinforce the 32nd Indiana Regiment. They were engaged in a skirmish with the Rebels on the south side of Green River in KY. On September 3, 1862, his regiment was assigned to the 28th Brigade in Louisville, KY. During the marches of that Summer, the soldiers of the 79th PA suffered severely because of the scarcity of water. Pvt Leonard Rockey was one of the soldiers who became sick during the Fall of 1862. His military record states that he "died from disease" on October 5, 1862 and was buried at Nashville National Cemetery in Tennessee.
