BIOGRAPHIE: Plane crash claims life of Simpson alumus Allison Ullmann/Staff Writer Issue date: 11/30/06 Section: News - A plane crash in northern Indiana Nov. 13 claimed the life of Simpson College alumnus Joshua Trainor, class of 2005. "[Trainor] was the kind of man who always had a smile and was very polite and pleasant," said Jim Thorius, vice president of student development and dean of students. Trainor and three business colleagues from Two Rivers Marketing in Des Moines were returning home from a business trip when their plane crashed. Killed in the crash were Tom Dunphy, 41, of Clive, the co-founder of the Des Moines-based marketing company; Eric Jacobs, 31, of Ankeny, who worked in information technology; and Leslie O'Bannon, 27, of Des Moines, an account executive. Also killed was pilot John Trewet, 45, of Atlantic. Funeral services were held for Trainor on Nov. 18 at St. John's Lutheran Church Buck Creek, a rural church outside of Sumner, Iowa. Trainor is survived by his parents, Jeff and Mary Trainor of Sumner; two brothers, Justin and Jerad, both of Sumner; and his fiancé, Heather Barglof of Des Moines. Barglof is also a Simpson College alumna, class of 2006. "He was a go-getter type of person," said senior Evan Schaefer. "He was kind and generous to others and was willing to do anything for anybody." Trainor was a computer information systems major and a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity at Simpson. "I know Josh as a great member of Alpha Tau Omega," said senior Reed Weston, one of Trainor's fraternity brothers. "He served as a Top Five officer for the chapter and was always actively involved in the house's activities. He spent a lot of time in the weight room; he had two or three lifting partners always because he was so friendly. Josh was a great person and friend to everyone he associated with." Trainor was employed at Two Rivers Marketing of Des Moines for the past two years and was the information technology specialist. He started off at the company as an intern and was then offered a full-time position. "He was a bright and energetic young man," said Thorius. "It is a real tragedy to see his life cut short." ************************************************************************************************************** Crash Victim's Fiancee Organizes Fundraiser Fiancée Seeks Event Sponsors, Golf Players - POSTED: 3:41 pm CDT May 22, 2007 UPDATED: 7:11 pm CDT May 22, 2007 DES MOINES, Iowa -- June 30 was supposed to be the wedding day for a central Iowa couple, but a plane crash in November changed everything. Josh Trainor was on a plane with his co-workers Eric Jacobs, Tom Dunphy, Leslie O'Bannon and pilot Mitch Trewet. They were on a business trip for Two Rivers Marketing when the plane went down near South Bend, Ind. Exactly six months to the day before the crash, Trainor asked his girlfriend to become his wife. Their wedding was already completely planned when the plane went down. Fiancée Heather Barglof soon knew she had to plan something else to fill the day. She said she felt a push from him to help get her through the loss and then knew she had to do something. "I knew I couldn't just sit by and let this all happen to me and just go on about my life. I feel like he just put the idea in my head and there it went," she said. Her idea brought her to the Toad Valley golf course in Pleasant Hill. "He had just started golfing. He wasn't very good but he loved golf," she said. Barglof planned a charity golf tournament for June 30 that will celebrate Trainor's life and raise funds for low-income children so they can have a good Christmas with their families. Barglof recalled that last Christmas Trainor said he did not want her to get him any gifts and that he wanted to donate money they would spend on each other to charity. "June 30 was supposed to be our wedding day, so we chose a golf tournament," she said. "I think he would've been so excited about this. His mom tells me (that) as we start to talk more about the golf tournament, she's like, 'I can see him. He always used to just wink at you,' and she said, 'I can just see him giving you that wink right now,' and I think he would be really proud of everything I've done," she said. The Christmas gifts will all go to children in central Iowa and children in Trainor's hometown of Sumner. Barglof is looking for players and businesses to sponsor holes at the tournament. She hopes to raise about $18,000. ************************************************************************************************************* Event Details - Copyright 2007 by KCCI.com. Michigan City, IN: A wrongful death suit has been filed in Iowa by two Michigan City attorneys on behalf of a man killed in a 2006 plane crash near Mill Creek. Attorney Donald Pagos filed the lawsuit on behalf of the family of 23-year-old Joshua Trainor for damages that have not yet been specified. Both Pagos and attorney Scott Pejic are being assisted by Waterloo, Iowa attorney Eric Johnson. The lawsuit was filed in Polk County, Iowa because there are no caps that can be placed on damages for wrongful death lawsuits in the state. Indiana has a cap of $300,000 on wrongful death lawsuits that involve single victims with no children as dependents. Trainor was not married and did not have any children. Plane CrashPagos said that Trainor's father and mother, Jeffrey and Mary Trainor, came to him to obtain his services in filing the lawsuit over the death of their son. Named in the suit is pilots Tom Dunphy, 41, and John Trewet, 45, as well as CPRT Investment Corp., which is an air charter business. Dunphy was the vice president of Two Rivers Marketing, which was Trainor's place of employment and Trewet was a shareholder and an officer in CPRT. Dunphy and Trewet were both killed in the crash as well. The lawsuit has also named Teledyne Continental Motors as a defendant because the company manufactured the engines of the 1982 Cessna T303 that crashed on November 13, 2006, which was just seven minutes after leaving the runway of South Bend Regional Airport. Pagos is alleging that there was something wrong with the engines that led to the crash. The lawsuit is also charging that Dunphy chartered the aircraft from CPRT and that he was negligent due to the fact that he was not licensed to transport passengers for hire and was not licensed to operate on the instruments that were needed that night for weather condition reasons. Pagos has also stated that the plane was more than 300 pounds over the weight allowed for takeoff. When the National Transportation Safety Board Ruled on the crash, they said that it was pilot fatigue that led to the tragedy. They found two instances that indicated Trewet did not respond correctly to instructions coming from the tower right before the plane took off and right after. Trainor was just one of five people who had passed away in the crash. The others who died were Leslie O'Bannon, 27, and Eric Jacobs, 31. No date has yet been set for a jury trial. ************************************************************************************************************** Family of Man who Died in Plane Crash Files Lawsuit By Becky Ogann - Story Created: May 9, 2008 at 11:44 AM CDT Story Updated: May 9, 2008 at 12:34 PM CDT DES MOINES (AP) - The family of a Des Moines man who was killed in a marketing company plane crash in Indiana has filed a wrongful death lawsuit. The lawsuit, by Joshua Trainor's family, claims Two Rivers Marketing, the chartered pilot and the plane's engine designer share responsibility for the Nov. 13, 2006, crash. The lawsuit, filed in Polk County, also alleges that Trainor's boss and the pilot's employer are guilty of "gross negligence," which led to the crash. Trainor, three co-workers and the pilot died when the plane crashed shortly after takeoff from the South Bend Regional Airport. A report from the National Transportation Safety Board later found that the pilot, John Trewet, of Atlantic, was tired, misread clearances before takeoff and was flying an overweight plane.
