Sophia was born in fall of 1865 on ship coming to America from Germany.
From the back of a picture apparently taken for Sophia's golden wedding anniversary, author unknown -"On May 7, 1939, Mr. & Mrs Laurence Hesse celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at their home North of Paxico where they have lived most of their married life. They were married May 7, 1884 at Evansville, Illinois in the St Boniface church by Rev Fr. Carl Rolsner. Mr Hesse is past 74 and Mrs Hesse is past 73 years of age and are enjoying fairly good health and are the parents of 8 children, Mrs Louis Breitenstein, Mark and Leonard of Paxico, Mrs Joe Kaiser, Mrs Laurence Ghertner, of Evansville, Illinois, and Mrs Herman Neugebaur, two dying in infancy. They also have 19 grandchildren, all being present for this happy occassion. Also present were Mrs John Hesse and Mrs John Neugebaur, the two bridesmaids who attended the couple 50 years ago. Many relatives and friends called during the day, who offered their congratulations and wished them many more years of married life. Mrs Hesse's parents, Mr & Mrs Henry Schmidt, also celebrated their golden wedding on Sept 10, 1910."
