Notes for this person
Obituary of James D. Gilbert James Daniel Gilbert was born at Salem, Iowa, August 10, 1854, and passed away at his home in Libertyville, Iowa, Wednesday, March 8, 1922, aged 67 years, 6 months and 18 days. He was united in marriage to Miss Ida Berry of Leando, Iowa, Feb. 2, 1881. To this union were born three children, two of whom, Oscar of Des Moines, and Mrs. Mae Hoot of Hardin, Missouri, still survive, the wife and infant babe having preceded him in death on Dec. 23, 1885. He was again united in marriage to Miss Matilda Redman, of Eldon, Io. To this union were born six children, five of whom with his wife, are left to mourn his departure. They are: Flavil of Des Moines, Iowa; Mrs. Edith Hewitt of Leando, Io.; Andrew of Leando, Io.; Albert and Bessie who are at home. He also leaves 6 grandchildren, Hazel Hewitt of Leando, Reva Lewis of Hardin, Mo.; Charles and Clara Hoot of Hardin, Mo.; Ruth Messenger of Des Moines, Iowa, and Norma Gilbert of Leando, and three brothers and three sisters, William of Uncla, Colorado; Charles of Douds, Iowa; Mrs. Sam Lucas of Eldon, Iowa; Mrs. Edward Stubbs of Henton, Mo., and Mrs. W.W. Jackson of Douds, Io. Mr. Gilbert had been ill for several months, being confined to his bed for the past three months. Although his suffering was at times almost unbearable he bore it without a murmur and throughout all his sickness he was patient and kind, never grumbling or complaining. Mr. Gilbert was converted to the Christian faith some years ago. He made his home most of his life at or near Leando, until 8 years ago when he moved to Libertyville, Iowa, where he resided at the time of his death. He will be sadly missed not only in the home but in the community as well, as he was a kind and loving husband and father, a kind and thoughtful neighbor. The family and many friends revere his memory and remember with gratitude his kind deeds. Short funeral services were conducted at the home in Libertyville at 10 o'clock in the morning and at 1:30 in the afternoon at the Leando church by Rev. Charles I. Ellis of Douds, Friday, March 10, 1922. The remains were buried in the Leando cemetery. Source: Van Buren Co.
