MORDECAI SAYLES OF EVANSVILLE, IS DEAD Deceased Celebrated His Ninetieth Birthday Last Jan--Had 20 Great-Grandchildren. Mordecai Sayles, one of the oldest and most respected residents of Evansville, died at an early hour Wednesday morning. Deceased was born Jan. 19, 1816, in West Bloomfield, Ontario , New York. He came to Wisconsin in 1845, locating in Darien, Walworth . In 1868 he moved to Magnolia township. His first wife was Miss Lucy P Beebe of New York, whom he married March 29, 1837, and who died May 31, 1868. He was married Sept. 8, 1869, to Miss Nancy Windsworth, who survives him. There wer eight children by the first wife and three by the second, and thirty grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren are still living. The family joined in a celebration of Mr. Sayles' ninetieth birthday last Jan. Deceased had been in failing health for some time. The funeral is to be held tomorrow. Page 5:3] [courtesy of Ruth Ann Montgomery] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Mordecai Sayles Passes Away Aged Nearly Ninety-One Years Mr. Mordecai Sayles, well known and highly respected in this vicinity died at his home on the East side, about midnight, Tuesday, Nov. 6, 1906. The deceased had been in failing health for many months and friends have realized for some time past that the end was near. Mr. Sayles was born Jan. 17, 1816, in West Bloomfield, New York; moved with his parents to Steuben in 1837, and in 1845, came to Wisconsin, locating in Darien, Walworth , where he resided until 1850, then went to Dane , near Madison. In 1868 he moved to Magnolia Township, Rock , where he purchased a farm, which he successfully managed. While residing in Dane , he served as Postmaster. Eighteen years [ago] he moved to this city, where he has since resided.On March 29, 1837, in Ontario , New York, he was united in marriage to Miss Lucy P. Beebe, who died May 31, 1868. On Sept. 8, 1869, he married Miss Nancy Wadsworth, who survives him. He was the father of eight children by the first marriage and three by the second. Besides the wife, he leaves seven children, namely; Harrison Sayles of Black Earth, Mrs. Chas Netherwood of Oregon, Mrs. Mary Niles of Redfield, S. Dak., Frank Sayles of Rockton, Wis., Mrs. S. L. Sheldon of Clear Water, Minn. Miss Nettie C. Sayles, and Arthur Sayles; also thirty grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren. On last Jan. 17th, he celebrated his ninetieth birthday anniversary, to which about forty-five relatives were present. The funeral services took place at the late residence this Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, Rev. E. A. Ralph officiating. Undertaker W. F. Biglow had charge of the funeral. On Jan 17, 1906, about forty-five relatives gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Mordecai Sayles to help celebrate the ninetieth birthday anniversary of Mr. Sayles. Mr. Sayles was born Jan 17, 1816, in West Bloomfield, Ontario , New York. He moved with his parents to Steuben , in 1837, and in 1845 he came to Wisconsin, locating in Darien, Walworth , where he resided until 1850. Then he went to Dane , near Madison, and when he wished to build his house he had to draw lumber from Racine, fifty miles, calling at Darien to have the frame fitted. In 1863 he moved to Magnolia township, Rock , having bought a farm, which he still owns. He served as postmaster while residing in Dane . He married Miss Lucy P. Beebe of Ontario , New York, March 29, 183?, She died May 31, 1868. Eight children were born to this union. He again married Miss Nancy Wadsworth Sep 8, 1869. Three children were born to this union, the eldest, Mrs. Lillian Devereaux, having departed this life but a few months ago. The other two, Miss Nettie C. Sayles, who is a teacher in the schools at Brainard, Minn., and Arthur Sayles, who is assistingin the train dispatcher's office of the Northwestern railroad at Baraboo, were unable to be present at the happy reunion on account of their duties. The two sons and three daughters, together with thirteen gand children and seven great-grandchildren were present at the elaborate dinner and supper served by Mrs. Sayles. Mr. Sayles is the grand-parent of thirty grand-children and twenty great-grandchildren. It was an occasion never to be forgotten by the memmbers of the family; and one enjoyed by all, especially Mr. Sayles, who is enjoying good health, although unable to walk on account of an attack of rheumatism. The relatives present to spend the day with Mr. and Mrs. Sayles were as follows: Mr. and Mrs. C.W. Netherwood and family, Mr. and Mrs. William Gillett and baby, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Chandler and family of Oregon, Wis.; Oscar B. Sayles of Spring Green; Dr. and Mrs. L.B. Sayles and daughter of Baraboo; Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Heisel and family of Rockton, Ill.; Mr. and Mrs. Harrison Sayles and family of Black Earth; Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Niles of Redfield,South Dakota; Mr. and Mrs. Elizer Sheldon of Clear Water, Minn.; Mrs. Dr. Keenan of Edgerton,Wis.; Mrs. Addie Marvin, of Nekoosa; Mrs. Louise Wadsworth, Harry Wadsworth, Mrs. Maggie Fitch, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Netherwood and daughter of Madison; Mr. and Mrs. Ed. He also raises stock. Married Miss Lucy P. BEEBE, of Ontario Co., N.Y., March 29, 1837. She died May 31, 1868. They had eight children - Polly A., born Jan. 29, 1838; W. H. Harrison, born Jul 19, 1839; he lost his left leg at Vicksburg; Hepzibah L., born Jan. 29, 1841; Mordecai, born Dec. 5, 1842, died Aug. 4, 1862, in the Good Samaritan Hospital, St. Louis; Roxa A., born March 25, 1845; Mary E., born March 3, 1848; Frank M., born Feb. 12, 1851; Sarah L. born Oct. 13, 1853. He again married Miss Nancy H. WADSWORTH, of Hamilton Co., N.Y., Sept. 8, 1869. They have had three children - Lillian M., born Nov. 6, 1879; Arthur L., born Sept. 19, 1872; Nettie C., born Dec. 22, 1874. He was Postmaster in Dane Co. Mrs. SAYLES is a member of the Close Communion Baptist Church.
