Homemaker. Taught school early in her adult life. Member of a pioneer family to Colorado-her great grandfather was B. F. Wadsworth (1827-1893), a founder of the city of Arvada. Daughter of Philip Eldro Graves (1875-1962) and Marion Agnes Graves (1882-1962). Wife of Ronald B. Jones (1903-1986); Mother of two sons. Numerous grand children, great grand children, sister Phyllis M. Rowley, Columbia City, Oregon, brother Benjamin (Ben) Graves, Arvada, Colorado, and cousins survive. A wonderful lady who had an unusally significant and positive impact on all of the family-always had a story, a laugh and a smile. Served on the Publications Committee of the Arvada Historical Society. ************************************************* The following is abstracted from a biography written by Rite Jones, and appeared in the Nov, 2004 edition of The Arvada Historian: The year I started first grade at West Lake School on what is now Lowell [Blvd in Adams , Colorado], we walked two miles to school. We only went to that school a couple of months and [sister] Lucy and [brother] Henry missed most of the second grade in 1918 because of the terrible flu epidemic and the schools were closed. My brother Phil was born Feb 2, 1919. Now there were five children and three men to keep house for and it was too much for Mom, so they decided to move to Arvada where he [father Philip Eldro Graves] could work in cousin Bob Graves' [Ford dealership] garage. We moved to a seven acre place on Juchem Lane (now Garrison St.) when I was nearly seven. Mom enrolled the three of us in school, and my room was in a little brick building on Wadsworth which later was made into the Arvada Theater. Miss Helen Lawrence was my teacher and didn't appreciate a new pupil coming in after school was well underway. Mom knew I could do the work so told her to give me a chance for a week. When she came back Miss Larence said "I wish all my pupils were as good as she is." I can still see that little lady not five feet tall standing by the big old charts on easels and flipping over the sheets, teaching us phonics and words. She taught first grade for many years, and later on when the new school was remodeled it was named the Lawrence School [located at 5611 Zephyr St., Arvada CO 80002 and is part of the Jeffco sytem] after her. She lent my sister Lucy $100.00 when she graduated and went off to Greeley to Teachers College [now the University of Northern Colorado]. Mrs. Janet Chenn was my second grade teacher. Then I passed to third gradt, but was so far advanced the teacher told Mom I'd be wasting my time so I went on to fourth grade. Sweet Georgia Brown was my teacher. She was a little white-hairred lady with a long jawbone, not too pretty but nice. Mrs. Mabel Wilson, a read-headed large lady was my fifth grade teacher and also the principal of the school. The steps had flat slabs on concrete on either side, and these made great places to play jacks. I remember how embarrassed I once was when I was reading in class and came to the word "fatigue." I didn't know the word or what it meant and pronounced it "fat-e-que" and everyone laughed but me. Addie Moon was my teacher in sixth grade. She was a nice lady and everyone liked her. Every once in awhile we would plan a fruit shower. Everyone would bring fruit in secret and before she came back into the room after noon we would pile the fruit on her desk and holler "surprise!" when she came in. She would cut the fruit into pieces and we all had some. Joe Hale was in the class. He wore corduroy pants and every time he walked the pants rubbed together and made a funny sound. We played "Pump, Pump, Pull-Away", Red Light, tag, and other games. On Arbor Day, each class planted a tree along one side of the schoolyard. Before the trees got big enoough for shade it was really hot in the long black cotton stockings that Mom made us wear. The building was an old red brick and had been the high school too until the new one was built on Ralston Road in 1920. Our janitors were Mr. Eddy, a fat man, and Joe Munal, a tall skinny curly-haired fellow. Mr. Munal's room was in the dark basement close to the furnance room and the girls and boys rest rooms were on opposite sides. It was sort of scary to go down there as it only had a few dimly-lighted bulbs. He used a sweeping compound on the dark wooden floors and the school always smelled strongly of that oily smell. Mr. Munal also owned the shoe repair shop. We'd often so (sic) into his shop to take shoes to be repaired. What a smell of leather, and a hot smell as he used an emery machine to smooth the soles. Most interesting of all was the candy counter. There uch have been 30 or 40 kinds of penny candy displayed in it. Some were five for a penny, but the more you got the less you liked them except for the tiny little black licorice figures (we called them "n***** babies"). You don't taste delicious licorice like that any more. Jawbreakers, watermelon slices made of coconut (a favorite), sour orange balls, sourballs and peanut candy that looked like a shiny hellow peanut, etc. And strong black licorice cigars with a pretty band around them. Dad worked at his cousin Bob Ford's garage on Grandview for several years in the parts department. Since school wasn't far away we walked past the garage and stop (sic) in to see Dad. Sometimes he's (sic) take us into the repair department and show us the castor oil they used for something. Then he would tip the bottle up and take a big swallow to impress us that he liked it, since we hated it so. We would always ask Dad for a nickel to buy a candy bar. Our favorite was a Baby Ruth with milk chocolate coating, but someimes we'd choose the Oodles. It was nearly twice as long as a Baby Ruth and had dark chocolate. If there were three of us we'd buy an Oodles because we got more when we divided it into three parts. A big event every year was the Harvest Festival Parade. All classes from kindergarten up were in it. The town had a little tram (Little Eva) that ran around town the day of the Festival. You could ride free if you could get a place. A tractor pulled it and dthere were five or six flat-top cars, which probably held a dozen or so kids each. You could jump on or off whever you wished. They let the kindergarten and first and second graders ride the tram. The rest followed after it.
