Memories of Family You know of course that your father was my hero and gave me a lot of the direction I had in my life, and despite a childhood that was less than it it might have been,his care and belief in me made all the difference at some very crucial cross roads for me. I have thought about him often over the years. he once gave me Bill Mauldins book "Up Front", and I memorized every cartoon caption (probably 125 or more) in the book and can do it today, though I haven't seen the book in years! It explained to me part of what your father endured for 3+ years during WW11. Whats more, he also gave me his division history, "The Story of The Century", recounting the campaigns in France and Germany of the 100th. Infantry Division. When you read even the dry, matter of fact military narrative you can't help but feeling that we owe so much to a bunch of American kids who slugged it out against a fanatical and skilled enemy. Acts of bravery were simply common place and though I always asked your Dad what it was like, he said little if anything. His is"The Greatest Generation", hands down! Even now, I get it out to read again the history of Citizen Soldiers who did the job assigned and it makes me proud to think of my Uncle Bill. I remember when your father was leaving for the service in WWII and we use to write to him and also send packages. When he got out of the service he went to Arnold College in Milford and also the Univ. of Bridgeport, I think he played football at Arnold but I never got to see him play. Arnold College was right near where you lived in Milford, it was up the hill from where you lived and I think it's a Convalescent Home now which it was also prior to being a college. He also served as a Sargent-Major at the War Crimes Trial in Germany at the end of the war. Have you heard of any of this up till now? (Marshall's answer: No, I had not)
