1831 preceded his family to Cassville, WI grant co. where he joined his friend, Major Glendower Price, from Philadelphia, who had arried not too long before. Their wives were sisters. Both in 1832 participated in the Black Hawk War in1834. "Mrs Anna Forbes with two children, one two years old (Harriet P. B 1832) and the other "your humble servent " (Josephine C. b: 1834), arrived in Cassville and were greeted by Mrs. Harriet (Hardin or Riley) Price, her sister and wife of Glendower Price. These children were born in Philadelphia. 1842-45 resided in Lancaster, WI grant co. "james Otis was removed as postmaster (was unsympathetic to the tyler administration) and Benjamin F. Forbes, from cassville,was appointed in his place. Living in the home vacated by Mr. Scott Postmaster at Lancaster, WI. Grant co. 1845 kept a hotel on the site of the Callie residence. The house caught fire and was totally destroyed by a defective flue inthe attic. This was lancaster's first fire. Little exept clothing was saved.After the fire he moved accross the Mississippi River to Jacksonville, IA clayton co. (Possibly returned to Cassville to keep a hotel and then returned to Jacksonville, at that time named changed to Garnavillo)" (7) Located in Jacksonville, before Sep 1845 , as a hotel keeper, possibly bough farmland in 1848 in garnavillo. Many grand balls and parties were held at his hotel. 1849, he followed the "gold rush" to Marysville, California Butte co. the metropolis of the gold hills. he took a string of pack mules, laden with mining supplies and followed the trail to the hills, prospecting as he went. Drifting into Butte co. where he found a few scatered miners, casting his lot with them, gold was foundright in the little creek (south Fork of the Feather River) that ran through his camp. This started a mad rush for the little camp of Forbes. Soon opened upa general merchandise store. Sent to Washington D.C. for a post office charter, thus he founded Forbestown,California in Butte co. sept 1 1850. Made a strike, $30,000. he turned his general store over to his brother Jared J. Forbes who later joined him, and returned to Garnavillo, IA clayton co. about 1852 where he continued to run his hotel, now named Garnavillo Hotel. Purchased Garnavillo General store, (also called the Forbes store) about 1852, account book shows accounts 1852-1859. Bult the Upper Buck Creek saw mill 15 may 1852. gradually acquired more land and at the time he sold this 28 mar 1857 the property totaled 300 acres.
