Alexander Wadsworth (1806-1898) was an American landscape architect and surveyor, best known for his work on the Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Born in Hiram, Maine, Wadsworth studied civil engineering at Gardiner Lyceum before beginning his work as a surveyor in the Boston, Massachusetts area. He collaborated with Henry A. S. Dearborn on the topographic details of Mount Auburn Cemetery, and had a successful career designing parks and suburban subdivisions, primarily in eastern Massachusetts. Wadsworth was a cousin of poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. from the Boston Daily Advertiser, 16 Feb 1898, p. 2 ALEXANDER WADSWORTH Alexander Wadsworth died in this city yesterday, aged 82. Mr. Wadsworth was born in Hiram, Me. in 1806. When he was 20 he came to Boston to make his way in the world. He learned surveying and became a civil engineer. He laid out Pemberton Square, and the Chicopee Water Works, at that time a great engineering feat. Later he entered politics, and during the later years of the war he was a member if the common council and water board. He was then sent to the legislature as representative, and served in that capacity for five years. He leaves four children, eight grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
