Immigrated to Boston, Mass. on Sunday, 16 Sep 1632 on the Ship "Lion" Possibly had a brother Christopher. Lived in Hartford, Connecticut and Cambridge Mass. (Holyoke Street). He was a Puritan. Long Buckley is in Northampton, England D EATH: Ancestral file shows a 1676 death date in Hartford, Connecticut WILLIAM, Cambridge 1632 came, prob. with fam. of four ch. Sarah, William, wh. d. young, Mary, and John, in the Lion from London, arr. 16 Sep. See Winthrop Hist. I. 90. This date overthrows the slight presumption. of some memory. of the mod. family. that their progenitor. had been first of Braintree, inasmuch as the court had in the preceding. mo. order. the few friends of Hooker, wh. had sat down at B. to remove to a safer spot. He was freeman . 6 Nov. 1632, and in the great exodus, Jun 1636, removed to Hartford, and there seems to have liv. in the highest esteem, no man ever more oft. chos. rep. for between Oct. 1656 and May 1675 (his last appear.), hardly a single yr. miss. his serv. Prob. he d. soon aft. He m. 2 Jul 1644, Elizabeth Stone, but this, of course, not his first w. outliv. him. His ch. by this w. were Elizabeth b. 17 Mary 1645; Samuel, 20 Oct. 1646, wh. d. at mid. age; Joseph, a. 1648; Sarah, the sec. 17 Mar. 1650; Thomas, a. 1651; and Rebecca, a. 1656; but of the first w. we kn. nothing, nor the order of dates for her ch. nor indeed date of a single one. The first Sarah m. 17 Sep. 1646, John Wilcox; Mary m. a. 1656, Thomas Stoughton of Windsor, so that we can be sure these two as well as John were of the first w. Elizabeth m. 27 Nov. 1662, John Terry of Windsor; and Sarah of the sec. w. m. 10 Nov. 1669, Jonathan Ashley of Springfield. He d. 1675, his will of 16 May 1675, with his inv. of 18 Oct. foll. and his wid. d. 1682, when Rebecca was unm. Will of William Wadsworth - May 16, 1675 Whereas I, William Wadsworth, being weak in Body by the visiting hand of God, but of perfect memory, doe make this my last Will & Testament: I give to my wife Elizabeth Wadsworth £20 a year the term of her life to be paid, £8 by Samuel Wadsworth, £6 by Joseph Wadsworth, & £6 by Thomas Wadsworth. I give to my son John Wadsworth £10 as a token of my Love. I give to my son Samuel Wadsworth the other part of my Dwelling house, with all the Houseing thereto belonging, and the Land belonging to it. I give unto my son Joseph Wadsworth the house & Land I bought of Daniel Pratt in Hartford. I give unto my son Thomas all my Lands beyond the Great River, and the Barn to be finished out of the Estate, & 1/4 part of the Household Stuffe which his Mother have not. I give unto my daughter Stotan £12, to my daughter Ferris £16. I give unto my daughter Ashely 20 Shillings. To my daughter Rebeckah £50 & 1/4 part of my Household Stuffe which the Mother have not. I give unto my gr. daughter Long 20 Shillings. I give unto my son Samuel the Corne that is upon the Ground & all the Cattle, And I doe make him my son Samuel Wadsworth my sole Executor to this my Will, and desire Mr. George Gardner and Capt. John Allyn to be Overseers. William Wadsworth Witness: George Gardner Sarah Howard Inventory at Hartford of £1677-10-09 taken Oct. 16, 1675 by Nicholas Olmstead and Nathaniel Willett. Family History: New England Families #2 William Wadsworth was born about 1600; settled at Cambridge, Massachusetts, and when the town was organized was elected on the first board of selectmen, 1634-35; went to Hartford, Connecticut, in Hooker's company and lived there the remainder of his life; died in 1675; was one of the more wealthy and substantial proprietors of the town; collector in 1637, selectman in 1642-47. REFN: 685 First Sttlers of the Colony. Wadsworth, William, Hartford--selectman in 1642, also in '47, collector in 1637, deputy in 1642, and frequently afterwards. He was an original proprietor of Hartford, and in the division of the land of the town in 1639.--He was a valuable man in the town and colony. (He is supposed to have been the ancestor of Joseph Wadsworth of Charter notoriety.) He died in 1675. His sons were, John, Samuel, Joseph, and Thomas. He had a daughter who married a Mr. Stoton--another Terry--another Jonathan Ashley, and left Rebecca unmarried--he also had a grand daughter Long. He was a gentleman of wealth and of high reputation in the colony. This Wadsworth was of the blood of him who told Col. Fletcher when he demanded the command of the militia of Connecticut, that if he was again interrupted by him, "he would make the sun shine through him in an instant." First Sttlers of the Colony. Wadsworth, Elizabeth, widow of William--died 1680. Her children were, Samuel, Joseph, Thomas, Elizabeth Terry, Jonathan Ashley, Rebecca and John Wadsworth. CHURCH MEMBERSHIP: Admission to a Massachusetts Bay church (probably Watertown) prior to 6 Nov 1632 implied by freemanship. By Jan 1650 William Wadsworth's holdings included "one parcel of meadow lying in the north meadow ... two roods"; "one parcel lying in the old ox pasture containing ... thirty-eight acres"; "one parcel lying in the cow pasture containing ... eighteen acres, two roods, & thirty & six parches"; " one parcel of woodland lying on the west side of the little river ... eighteen acres, two roods & thirty-six parches"; "one parcel lying on the east side of the great river ... one hundred & fourteen acres"; "one parcel lying in the little ox pasture which he bought of Richard Lord containing ... four acres"; "one parcel of meadow lying in the north meadow which he bought of Stephen Hart containing ... three acres & thirty parches"; "one parcel lying in the Soldier's Field containing ... fourteen acres ... whereof he bought of Stephen Hart & part of Zacheriah Field & another part of Richard Olmsted & another part of Will Blomfelld & another part of Nickolas Clarck & another part of William Hayton & another part of John Bronsunn & part of Nath. Yele"; "one parcel of meadow & swamp lying in the north meadow which he bought of Stephen Hart ... twenty acres, one rood & eighteen parches"; "one parcel of woodland lying for cow pasture ... thirty-three acres ... he bought of Richard Lord & another part he bought of Stephen Hart"; "one parcel of woodland which he bought of Richard Lord containing ... thirteen acres"; "one parcel which he bought of Stephen Hart called his house lot containing ... three acres"; "one parcel lying in the north meadow which he bought of Richard Olmsted containing ... two roods & five parches"; "one parcel which he bought of Richard Goodman lying on the west side of the river in a greater parcel which belongeth to Mrs. Haynes, Mr. Talcott, Mrs. Hooker & others, containing by estimation eight acres..."; "one parcel of upland & swamp being his division of upland on the east side the great river containing ... one hundred & fifty-six acres" By 21 Oct 1654 Richard Goodman had purchased two parcels in the ox pasture, one of four acres and one of five acres, one rood. At some point he exchanged a parcel of nine acres near the little river with this same Richard Goodman On 12 Jun 1666, William Wadsworth received one hundred and fifty-six acres of upland in Hartford on the east side of the river next to Windsor Mr. William Wadsworth had fifty-two acres and "in Stev: Harts 40" totalling ninety-two acres in one division of the undivided lands in Hartford On 14 Oct 1669 William Wadsworth was granted "three hundred acres of land provided that he take it up where it do not prejudice any former grants"
