Notes for this person
Israel Hubbard, son of Isaac, settled at the Plumtrees on the farm since occup ied by four generations of his descendants. In clearing the land for the new farm he left young saplings "to benefit future generations" as he remarked, th us making the maple grove, which is highly appreciated by the public of today, many of the original trees being still quite vigorous. (this was written in 1899). The present house was erected in 1763. It is still covered, in part, with some of the original clapboards. The windows were made small, as the tax on glass was then very heavy. Hand-wrought nails were used in its constructi on. This house was kept as a tavern for nearly 100 years. It was here that t he minute men assembled on the 19th of April, 1775, spent the night, and the next morning before light set out for the seat of war. In it was organized Pa cific Lodge of Free Masons, and was for some time their meeting-place. Captai n Israel Hubbard ws a man of great energy and activity, andof much wit and hum or. He was an active Whig in the Revolution, and a delegate to the first and third Provincial Congress in 1774 and 1775; a Representative in 1776, and fiv e years afterwards. He married Abigail Smith, daughter of Nathaniel Smith on Feb 19, 1749. The tavern became known as the CALEB HUBBARD home - who, lik e his father was a man of superior intelligence and much humor. CALEB HUBBA RD was born April 23, 1754. He was a Major and a magistrate and man of influe nce among his contemporaries. He was in the army of the REvolution and left a statement of his military services. He married Tryphena Montague, daughter of Daniel Montague and (2) Lucretia Ashley, daughter of Stephen Ashley.
