NEW YORK PRIVATELY PRINTED 1904 JOHN FITZ STEPHEN,4 who it appears married a daughter of the De Bradestonfamily, and had issue; HENRY FITZ STEPHENS, Baron of Winterbourne, by feudal tenure, concerningwhom there is evidence, that in the civil war of Edward II, he was close to the sceneand events, without being party to the assassination of the King in Berkeley Castle, 1327. In the reignof King Edward III, he held the lordship of Winterbourne conjointly with Thomas, first Lord Bradeston,Governor of Berkeley Castle.5 He had issue a son; HENRY FITZ STEPHENS, whose name is not certainly known though hispersonality is. He is referred to in legal documents; his son havinginherited from the latter's grandfather, on the recorded ground that he,the father, had died before the date of inheritance, i. e. vita patris.He left a son and heir; JOHN FITZ STEPHENS, Baron of Winterbourne, who succeeded his grandfatherin the lordship, holding it conjointly with Thomas de Bradeston, secondLord Bradeston, grandson of Thomas, first Lord Bradeston, beforementioned. Dying 13741 he left issue; JOHN STEPHENS, Esq., of St. Brivals, co. Gloucester, with whom the familyfirst omitted the Norman "Fitz" from its name. The joint holding of themanor of Winterbourne with the De Bradestons ended with him inconsequence of the extinction of the male line of the De Bradeston familywhich followed the death of the second baron of that house. He isrecorded to have held lands at St. Brival's Castle, and a baliwick in theroyal Forest of Deane, in the ninth year of the reign of King RichardII,1386.2 Having married a daughter of (???) Spelly, of Lewynesmede, co.Gloucester, he had issue; RICHARD STEPHENYS, Baron of Lewynesmede,3 by feudal tenure, who married adaughter of John Castel, of Bristol,4 and died 1390 having had issue; I.
