"Stevens - Stephens Genealogy and Family History " Author: Clarence Perry Stevens Call Number: CS71.S844 This book contains the history and genealogy of the Stevens-Stephensfamily of North Carolina. Bibliographic Information: Stevens, Clarence Perry. "Stevens-StephensGenealogy and Family History". Privately Published. 1968. 663) Thomas5 Stevens (Richard4, Thos.3) b. 3 Feb. 1674/5 at Taunton inthe suburb called Norton -m- in 1699 Mary Caswell, dau. of Thos. andsister of John Caswell of Berkeley Co., South Carolina. (TauntonRecords). He was on the roster of the First Military Company of Tauntonin 1700 and lived in Norton where he was a planter. He was a Selectmanfor a few years about 1711. In 1712 he had land laid out to him onLockety Neck near the junction of the Rumford and Wading rivers. Mary wasborn in 1679. According to Clark's Hist. of Norton, he is supposed to have diedsoon after 1752. This also gives his autograph spelled "Stephens"; nodeath record for him in either the Taunton or Norton V. R. July 18, 1703, Thomas and Mary sell to Benj. Shaw for 48 1bs. 8 acres of land inTaunton. This land was given to Mary and her brother Ben by their greatgrand-father Robt. Sanderson formerly of Boston, deceased, in his will, they to take the land when their father Thomas died.-Bk. 5, p.423,Taunton, Bristol Co., Deed Rec.)Oct. 30, 1759, Thomas being about 85years of age, testified that he knew well the road from Norton Southmeeting house.....(Bk. 44, p. 82-89, Ibid.) He probably died soonafter1759. The only children listed in T.V.R. are 3 who died under 15years of age, 2 of whom were Thomasin and Hannah Y., yet from thenumerous deeds it appears that John and Josiah were also sons. Oct. 10,1738, a deed shows Thomas sold land in Norton to son John. (B. 27, p. 502July 20, 1740, a deposition by Morgen Cobb shows a son of Thos. "wasincapable (incompetant) to provide for himself by nameJosiah.-B.28,p.270.Issue of 662) Thomas and Mary Stephens: 1. 685) John6 Stevens b. ca 1720 -m- in 1743 Anna Willis. John is ofNorton.(-T.V.R.) in Apr. 1753. John and Anna Stephens sold land on bothsides of the Rumford River. (B. 40, p. 141). 2. 686) Josiah All family records and histories agree 1) Nicholas, et ux. had a sonThomas, who, since he has not been found in New England, was apparentlyliving with 1) Nicholas when he died in the Carolina Colony. In therecords of the Perquimans precinct the following: 2 1696/7 Thomas Stephens a witness, Jan. court at Albemarle 1695 Thomas Stevens and wife Jane had Ann b. 1695. 1693 Thomas Stevens had a lawsuit with a Mr. Thorne 1690 Thomas Stevens had been a witness. Fortunately, unlike Massachusetts, there seems to have been only oneThomas Stevens there at that time. Later he removed a little south toCraven County where he left a will in 1751 naming a daughter Ann. Hathwaysays he married Mary Kaswell (Caswell) dau. of Francis Caswell of near byAlligator. But, in his will made in 1712 Francis does not call her MaryStevens, just Mary, which may indicate she was not married at that time. Jane may have died and Mary was 2ndwife. 7 Va. Colonial Abstracts, Vol 2, N. C. Hist. and Gen. Register, page 368. 1 Ray's Old Albemarle gives no Thos. Stevens in the index. DESCENDANTS OF 12) THOMAS STEPHENS of Craven County, NORTH CAROLINA Thomas4 Stevens (Nicholas3, Thos.2, Anthony1) b. ca 1662; d. 1751 inCraven County, N. C., leaving a will - Grimes N. C. Wills. He -m- 1st,before 1690 Jane (???). "Thos. Stephens and wife Jane acknowledged deedfor land sold to Benj. Laker on Castleton Creek." (Hathway's N. C. Hist.and Gen. Register, Vol. 2, p. 151). In 1693 he and Jane had a lawsuitwith a Mr. Thorne. (Ibid). I find no other Thomas Stevens in the colonyat this time. "Anne Stevens, daughter of Thos. and wife Jane was born March 5, 1695"(Ibid, Vol. 3, p. 368) (Mentioned in will.) In 1696 Thos. was a witness in Perquimans Precinct. In Jan. 1697 Thos. Summoned to court (Ibid I, p. 141) In 1702, Thomas Stevens on the list of tithables in Chowan Precinct.Apparently Jane died before 1712 (the vital records are rather poor forthat time) and Hathaway says Thomas then married Mary Kaswell (Caswell),dau. of Francis Kaswell, who in his will in 1712 lists Mary by her maidenname of Mary Kaswell (Caswell) so it appears that his 2nd marriage wasafter 1712. Probably the first five children ending with Anna were by hisfirst wife Jane and the last two by Mary. The youngest Child, John, apparently named a son, Francis, after his mother's father FrancisKaswell. In 12) Thomas' will in 1751 in Craven County where Thomas lived,it shows he let the home plantation to son John, subject to the lifeinterest of his mother, Mary. He had sold the farm at White Oak to Hath.Morrow. He apparently held no slaves, although son, John, did later. Theexecutors were Thos. Jr. and Ben Brocket, apparently husband of daughterSarah. Issue: *1. 160) Thomas Jr. b. ca, 1687, married, wife not traced. A deed showshe sold some land in Craven County about 1756. 2. 161) Sarah b. ca 1690 -m- Ben Brockett. His will mentions no childr soI doubt if they had any. (1758) 3. 162) Elizabeth b. ca. 1692. n.t. 4. 163) Mary b. ca. 1694. n.t. 5. 164) Anna or Anne, b. 1695 n.t. 6. 165) Frances b. ca. 1714, n.t. *7. 166) John b. ca 1716 -m- 1st ca. 1740 Grace Raiford, dau. of MatthewRaiford, settled in Cumberland Co., N. C. -m- 2nd Sarah (???). N.B. - In the first edition of this book, 12) Thomas was confused withthe Thomas, son of 13)Richard of Taunton, Mass. who also -m- a MaryCaswell. Some members of the Taunton family were proved to have come tothe Carolinas and the compiler made the mistake that 13) Richard's son,et ux. had come with them. It only made a difference in two generationsas they were all descended from Thomas2 of London, England, anyway. -----William Lackey Stephens;http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/s/t/e/William-Lackey--Stephens/index.html
