"Stevens - Stephens Genealogy and Family History" Author: Clarence Perry Stevens Call Number: CS71.S844 This book contains the history and genealogy of the Stevens-Stephensfamily of North Carolina. Bibliographic Information: Stevens, Clarence Perry. Stevens-StephensGenealogy and Family History. Privately Published. 1968. THE CHILDREN OF 2) THOMAS STEPHENS, Jr. Two of these children are proved to have been 13) Richard and 16)Cathrine (Stevens) Dean by the affidavit of Jonathan Lincoln above, buthe says without naming them "others of ye family came over to Taunton"and it is said that 15) Cyprian Stevens had other brothers. 13) Richard'sfather is proved to have been Thomas, the haberdasher of London. England, and nearly all of the writers agree that the father of 15) Cyprian wasalso a Thomas of London, but they thought he had come originally fromDevonshire. I have seen no proof of that. M. L. Holman in herStevens-Miller genealogy and others say that Colonel Thomas of Devon wasnot the father. I agree. Since this Thomas "the Armoorer" died in 1629,he could not have been the father of 15) Cyprian b. ca 1648. Savage, in his genealogical dictionary says "Thomas Stevens, who came toAmerica with his brothers Cyprian and Richard, was at Stowe, Mass. in1688." Note that he says "Cyprian and Richard" and Mr. Savage is verygood authority. An old Bemis Genealogy says the father Thomas was fromDevonshire and the children were Thomas who came over in 1660. Richard, the father of Samuel, Cyprian and Mary who married Capt. Whipple. Thisindicates they were brothers but the Samuel son of Richard seems to be anerror if applied to 13) Richard. We have then in addition to this evidence to note that the not so commonnames of Phineas, Simon and Cathrin Deane are found in the descendants ofboth men. But what seems to add the small additional evidence needed toprove the relationship is that I find in "Footprints down the Centuries"by Ethel Stevens, a grandson of 15) Cyprian, the renowned 145) Capt.Phineas Stevens, named a daughter Cathrine, obviously in honor ofCathrine (Stevens) Dean, the well known sister of Richard Stevens. Ithink the child was actually named Cathrine Dean since his grandson nameda daughter Cathrine Dean Stevens (page 87). This name is somewhat rare. Ithink this proves beyond a reasonable doubt that 13) Richard, 14) Thomasand 15) Cyprian were brothers and that 16) Cathrine and 17) Mary weretheir sisters, and if so, something over 2,000 listed descendants arelinked. In Well's History of Barnet, Vt. it is claimed 15) Cyprian had fourbrothers, so, if correct, this leaves two not yet proved. 13) Richard4 probably named a son Nicholas after his uncle 1) Capt.Nicholas3 Stevens. Savage's Genealogical Dictionary says Richard, Cyprian and Thomas werebrothers and this is supported by an old Bemis genealogy. The noted Captain Phineas Stephens, grandson of 15) Cyprian, named a daughter Cathrine, evidently after hisand Richard's sister. But what seems to add the small additional proofdesired is that Capt. Phineas' grandson named a child Cathrine DeanStevens. The married name of Richard's sister was "Cathrine Dean" andobviously she was also Cyprian's sister. See Stevens Genealogy - Footprints down the Centuries by Ethel M. Stevens. No other "Cathrine" or"Dean" appears on Phineas' wife's side of the family, except in thisStevens line as both she and her husband descended from 15) CyprianStevens (often spelled Steevens). So I consider it proved beyond areasonable doubt that 13) Richard and 16) Cathrine were brother andsister to 14) Thomas, 15) Cyprian and 17) Mary Stephens (Stevens). So theissue, so far as known of Mr. and Mrs. 2) Thomas Stephens of London was: 1. 13) Richard4, b. ca. 1642 d. 1726 -m- Mary Lincoln (dau. of ThomasLincoln, "the miller", and kin of President A. Lincoln); settled Taunton,Mass., ca 1660. 2. 14) Thomas4, b. ca. 1644 -m- Mary Green; a son, 64) Cyprian b.Sudberry, Mass.; he was in Stowe, Mass. 1688 and Plainfield, Ct. 1689 and1702. 3. 15) Cyprian4, b. ca. 1640 -m- Mary Williard and settled Lancaster,Mass. 4. 16) Cathrine4, b. ca. 1650, d. 1726 -m- Thos. Dean and lived in RhodeIsland. 5. 17) Mary4 -m- John Whipple of Ipswich, Mass. Issue n.t. Genealogical & Personal Memoirs of Worcester County, Massachusetts: Colonel Thomas Stevens of Devonshire, England was the father of the threeemigrants from whom a large part of the Stevens families of Massachusettsare descended. He was the progenitor of Charles F. Stevens, and George A.Stevens, of Worcester. He was the armorer of Buttulph Lane, London, whocontracted with the Massachusetts Bay colony and government in March,1629, for a supply of arms. He was a member himself of the MassachusettsBay Company, gave fifty pounds to the common stock and sent threesons,Thomas, Cyprian and Richard, and one daughter to New England.
