FAMILY RECORD OF ANDREW AND ESTHER SAFFORD STEVENS, Who were Married1735, at Plainfield, Windham County, Connecticut, and had: Andrew, who married Esther Safford. Thomas Stevens, Senior, bought alarge tract of land in Canaan Township, on which several of his sonssettled. Uriah Stevens was one of the grantees of the town of Canaan, in1745, his name being in the original charter. Andrew Stevens wasRepresentative in 1751 and 1761, and was first Town Clerk of Canaan. Hewas a prominent man in public affairs. I have been told by a grandson ofhis that he was a holder of `Delaware Rights,' and that in 1770, while onhis way home, he was struck by a falling tree and killed. He was living in Plainfield,Ct., in 1741 but later that year removed to Canaan, Ct. He was town clerkin 1741 and re-elected several times; a Selectman and Constable andrepresented the town in the Colonial Legislature 1749-1751. He served inthe French and Indian War under Lt. Col. Tarbal Whitney at the relief ofFort William Henry, N. Y. in 1757. He and his wife wereCongregationalists.
