He was the son of George Clarence Bryan and Maude Gertrude Shaw. He married Agatha M Varela in 1937. Ray was raised and educated in Stamford Connecticut. He spent all his professional life as an executive with the National Council, Boy Scouts of America. As assistant director of the Engineering Department, he was responsible for all physical arrangements of the American contingent at the Sixth World Jamboree, which was the first one held after World War II. It was held in France in 1947. He performed the same service at the Seventh World Jamboree in Austria in 1951. Appointed Assistant to the Chief Scout Executive in 1953, his responsibilities included management of the 145,000 acre Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron NM, which is the largest boy's camp in the world. From 1967 until his retirement in 1972, he served as director of The National Properities Division of the Boy Scouts of America. In 1972, he moved from Princeton NJ to Easton MD where he was active with the Rotary Club of Easton, the Poplar Island Yacht Club, The Talbot Country Club and the Church of the Holy Trinity in Oxford.
