Proud head of military family was devoted to his wife, the Lord

PEORIA - Virgil J. Reinders, age 88, of Peoria, formerly of East Peoria, passed away Sunday, March 14, 2010, at 9:50 a.m. at Proctor Home in Peoria.

Absent from the body, present with the Lord.

The son of Julius and Kathern (Fernbach) Reinders, he was born Jan. 2, 1922, in Sargeant, Neb.

He was a decorated veteran of World War II, having served in the Army Air Corps as a maintenance crew chief on B-24 Liberators.

After the war, he worked as a contractor and was a member of the Carpenters Local Union 183 and lifetime member of East Peoria VFW Post 2078. After his retirement in 1984, he enjoyed volunteering as a medical escort at Proctor Hospital for 16 years.

In 1997 he was inducted into the Greater Peoria Sports Hall of Fame as a member of the 1938 undefeated East Peoria High School football team.

Virgil was a quiet man, but loved being around people and spending time with his family. He was proud of the military accomplishments of his son, retired Major Sam Kirk, USMC, and his grandson, Army Lt. Col. Glenn Kiesewetter.

He traveled around the country visiting them at their various duty stations. He also enjoyed spending his winters in Georgia and Florida.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 52 years, Nina (Cundiff) Kirk Reinders; son, Sam Kirk of Pompano, Fla.; daughters, Carrie Kirk Kiesewetter (Merlin) of Creve Coeur and Robyn Reinders Wood (Erin) of Warner Robins, Ga.; eight grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and one brother, Ken (Mary Lou) Reinders of East Peoria.

He was preceded in death by a special uncle and aunt, John and Margaret Fernbach.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 20, 2010, at 10 a.m. at Grace Presbyterian Church in Peoria, where Virgil had been a member for many years. Pastor Douglas Lightly will officiate. Visitation will be Friday, March 19, 2010, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at Remmert Funeral Home in East Peoria. Burial with military honors will be in Fondulac Cemetery in East Peoria.

Memorials may be made to Grace Presbyterian Church, Centered in Christ Sunday School Class or Child Evangelism Fellowship, 708 E. Archer Ave., Peoria, IL 61603.
