John Francis Fife III, 80, died Saturday, January 24, 2009, surrounded by his loving family in his home in McMurray. He fought a lengthy and courageous battle against Parkinson's Disease.

He was born July 5, 1928, in Upper St. Clair, a son of John F. Fife II and Ruth Brown Fife. He had five brothers and sisters: Norman Richard, Beverly Jeanne, Patricia, Barbara and Kenneth Jay.

He married Anne Marie Breinig of Mt. Oliver, PA, on March 26, 1951. He was the loving father of Sue (Larry) Greenberger of Roselle, Ill., Becky (Steven) Evans of Venetia, Nancy Ruth Christner of Venetia, John Francis "Frank" Fife IV of McMurray, Timothy Douglas (Beth) Fife of Venetia, Scott Andrew (Debbie) Fife of Doylestown, Jacqueline Renee Fife of Venetia and the late William Paul Fife; brother of Norman Richard (Audrey) Fife of Linesville, Beverly Krieger of Upper St. Clair, Patricia Snyder of McKeesport, Barbara (Albert) Schwartz of Batesville, Ind., and the late Kenneth Jay (Carol) Fife of Springsboro; grandfather of Brandon Evans, Justin (Kara) Evans, Ben (Erin) Evans, Stephanie (Brian) Kiefer, Zachary Greenberger and Doug, William, Katie, Alison, Chelsea and Rachel Fife; and great-grandfather of Alexandra Ruth Kiefer, Luke Benjamin Evans and Calum Alexander Wilson.

Mr. Fife was an eighth-generation member of the first settlers of Upper St. Clair. He graduated from Bethel Park High School in 1948 and was a charter member of Lutheran Christian Mission of Bethel Park, which became Ruthford Lutheran Church in 1950. He worked as a sales representative for Standard Dry Wall Inc. for 35 years until his retirement in 1981. Following his retirement, he continued to work for Ruthfred Lutheran Church and later for Laidlaw Bus Co.

He was a foster father to 15 children, a Boy Scout leader in Bethel Park and Peters Township and coached several local football and baseball teams.

Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in Milton E. Hamel Mortuary, 169 McMurray Road, Upper St. Clair Township. Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 28, in Ruthfred Lutheran Church, Patterson and South Park roads, Bethel Park. Interment in Bethel Cemetery. The family requests memorials in Mr. Fife's name to Ruthfred Lutheran Church Organ Fund or Parkinson's Disease Fund.
