Edwin W. Barnes, 90, of 360 Locust View Way Troy, Ohio and 11708 Oakmont Court Fort Myers, Florida passed away at 2:00 p.m. Sunday December 21, 2008 at the HealthPark Medical Center of Lee Memorial Hospital System in Fort Myers, Florida following an extended hospitalization subsequent to a fracture of the hip. He was born January 7, 1918 in Maysville, Kentucky to the late Herbert C. and Bessie (Clark) Barnes. He married Catherine Caroline Agna on May 16, 1942 in Troy; she survives, currently residing at the Fort Myers address.

Other survivors include a son, Douglas A. (Teresa) Barnes, MD of Houston, Texas, where he is Chief of Staff of the Shriners Hospitals for Children-Houston and Associate Professsor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine; two grandsons, Douglas A. (Elizabeth) Barnes, Jr. and his great-grandson Brian M. Barnes of Lubbock, Texas and Christopher C. Barnes of Houston, Texas. A brother, David S. Barnes, preceded him in death in 1964. Additional survivors include a niece, Margaret Barnes Pennington of Louisville, Kentucky, and a nephew, David C. Barnes of Washington, D.C.

Mr. Barnes graduated from Madison High School in Richmond, Ky., completed undergraduate studies at Eastern Kentucky University, and obtained his Masters Degree in Education from George Peabody College of Nashville, Tennessee, now known as Vanderbilt University. He enjoyed success as an Insurance Sales Representative, Independent Realtor, and a Real Estate developer having retired from Mid-Continent Properties of Piqua, Ohio. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the former Piqua Citizens National Bank, now a part of 5th/3rd Bank of Cincinnati. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Troy, the Sanibel Florida Congregational Christian Church, Troy Country Club, Troy Masonic Lodge, Antioch Shrine of Dayton, Racquet Club of Piqua, the St. Charles Yacht Club of Sanibel/Fort Myers, the U.S. Power Squadron of Sanibel and Captiva Islands. Formerly, he was a member of the Troy Rotary Club and Miami County Home Builder's Association, having been a past President. He served his Country as a Lieutenant Commander in the United States Navy during World War II as the captain of a minesweeper in the Pacific Theater. Mr. Barnes has been awarded the honorary title of a Kentucky Colonel.

Private services will be conducted for his family Saturday December 27, 2008 with Pastor Ric Barnes officiating. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Troy. A formal memorial service will be held at Shell Point Chapel in Fort Myers in late January. Memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children, 6977 Main Street, Houston, Texas, 77030. Arrangements are being handled through the Jamieson & Yannucci Funeral Home.
