John H. "Jack" Conley Sr., 89, formerly of Manor Drive, Lewistown, died Sunday, Dec. 27, 2015, at Valley View Haven in Belleville.
Born Dec. 12, 1926, in DuBois, he was the son of the late Thomas and Cecelia Conley.
He graduated DuBois High School in 1946 where he was an outstanding halfback on the varsity football team and vice president of the senior class. He continued his education throughout his life to the equivalence of two years of college.
John is survived by his wife, Mary J. (Nelli) Conley; his son, John Conley Jr. and his wife Lisa of Lewistown; his daughter, MaryKay O'Connor and her husband John of Duncansville ; a brother, Thomas Conley and his wife Sally of Clarksburg, Md.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served as a sergeant during the Korean Conflict, including service on the front lines as an artillery sound ranging technician.
He established the original Archway Cookie distributorship in Mifflin and surrounding counties. Also, in addition to other business ventures, he and his wife Mary designed and operated the Frosty Freeze Drive-In located in Milroy that served customers for over 15 years. Later in life, he was a real estate agent with several local agencies.
John was a member of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus.
His family will receive friends Saturday, Jan. 2, 2016, from 9:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., at the Barr Funeral Home, 120 Logan Street, Lewistown.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, 106 North Dorcas St., Lewistown, with Father Michael officiating. All guests are invited to join the family at the interment that will be in Juniata Memorial Park where graveside military rites will be conducted by VFW Post 7011, Lewistown.
He will always be remembered for his love of the outdoors and his desire and contribution to preserve our woodlands. As a husband, father, relative, friend he will always be missed.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in John's memory may be made to the Disabled American Veterans , c/o Gary Stimely, 25 Valley View Lane, McVeytown, PA 17051.
