Details: I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith. II Timothy 4:7 Thus Irving Leo Johnson passed into the Lord’s presence on February 18, 2009 at the age of 92. He was born in Wren, Ohio July 6, 1916 of parents John and Pearl, who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Zearl (Shirley) and Kenneth (Thelma) and one sister, Zelma. Pastor ‘J’ or ‘PJ’ as he was affectionally known by kids and parishioners alike, graduated from Wren High School, attended and graduated from Moody Bible Institute. He also received some training at Trinity Seminary, which was then located in Chicago. He became a student Minister at Wayside Mission now known as Northside Bible Church. There he met LaVerne Fechner whom he married June 21, 1941. They became the parents of two sons, Dr. David Johnson of Okemas, MI and Darren Gilbert, who preceded him in death at the age of two. He served as Pastor of Yamp Congregational Christian Church, returning from there to again Pastor Northside Mission for six years. From there he moved to Rice Lake, WI where he was Pastor of the Maranatha Free Church for ten years. This ministry included a Sunday morning radio ministry as well as work among the Indian Trails in that area. Upon completion of that ministry he returned to Chicago area to Pastor the Evangelical Free Church in Evanston, IL. Loving to work with boys and girls, he became the Director of Activities at Lydia Children’s Home in Chicago where he spent six years. While there he became acquainted with the Salem Evangelical Free Church of Chicago and managed their Mission Home for some years. While in this ministry he met Mr. Bill Dillon. Together they organized what is now Inner City Impact which touches the lives of many inner city kids. There he led the Awanas game floor for many years. The kids loved him and nicknamed him ‘PJ’. Some of those kids have turned into fine young men leading productive lives in the Chicago land area. He became involved with the Des Plaines Bible Church and carried on the Awanas ministry there. Upon retiring in Kenosha, he was again involved with the Northside Bible Church, also helping his wife care for her parents for 5 years.
