Fatal Burning Accident.
DEATH OF A LITTLE GIRL.
A burning accident which terminated fatally happened, on Friday last, to a little girl named Bertha Schimke, aged nine years, daughter of Mr. August Schimke, a farmer, of Hatton Vale. The child had attended school on that day, and after coming home towards night, she procured a kerosene lamp in order to attend to a sore on one of her feet. While so engaged, the lamp was accidentally upset, with the result that her clothes were set on fire. She immediately ran out of the house, but bythis time her wearing apparel was pretty well all in flames. Her father, who was somewhere handy, with all haste endeavoured to extinguish the fire with his hands, but, failing in the attempt, he obtained some bedding material, with which he ultimately smothered the blazing garments. This, however, could not be done before the unfortunate girl was very severely burnt over the greater portion of the body. Temporary remedies were applied by the parents during the night, and on Saturday morning the sufferer was brought to Ipswich by the train, and admitted into the Hospital. On admission, she wassuffering severely from shock to the system, and not the slightest hope was entertained of her recovery. Everything possible was done by the medical superintendent (Dr. Thornton) and the nurses to alleviate the poor child's sufferings, but she expired shortly after 12 o'clock on the following (Sunday) morning. Mr. Schimke, who remained in town, had the body removed to Hatton Vale on Sunday, and the remains have since been interred there.
