Notizen zu dieser Person
Tochter von Johann Friedrich
Rathke and Auguste Louise Sophia Kuester
When Ernestine's son, Philip, was killed in World War I in France,
Ernestine was so upset that it was possible that her own family in the
German Army could have killed him, she wrapped herself in the United
States flag that the government gave the family, and with Philip's
picture on her chest, she shot herself in the head. This was 2 months
and 3 days after she and Ferdinand were notified of Phillip's death. She
left a suicide note saying that she couldn't stand the thought that
perhaps some of their Germany relatives had killed her son in the war,
and that she didn't like her life because she didn't have servants and
the lifestyle that she was used to in Germany. She died on 2/7/1919 and
is buried beside her husband at Brooklyn Hts. Cemetery. Ernestina's
father was said to be named John Radtke, but it turns out it was John
Rathke.
