David F. Terveer, 93, of Decatur, Ind., passed away on Tuesday, July 24, 2018, at Adams Woodcrest. Born on Jan. 7, 1925 in Decatur, he was the son of the late Bernard T. and Frances M. (Deininger) Terveer. On June 18, 1949 he married Betty J. Melchi and they celebrated 56 years of marriage; she preceded him in death on March 10, 2005. David was a 1942 graduate of Decatur Catholic High School, where he was an Indiana Catholic High School Athletic Association All-State Basketball Player. He received a scholarship to St. Joseph's College, Rensselaer and after active duty in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, he receved his B.A. Degree in 1948. He then earned his Master's Degree from Indiana University, Bloomington in 1952. He was a teacher and head basketball and baseball coach at Decatur Catholic High School from 1948 to 1956. He began his career with General Electric in 1956 holding various management and employee relations positions in Fort Wayne and Decatur. He is survived by his three children, Dr. Michael (Paige) Terveer of Lima, Ohio, Elizabeth "Liz" Terveer of Craigville, and Pat (Ginny) Terveer of Decatur; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by six siblings, Mary Martha Miller, Dr. John Terveer, Thomas Terveer, Kathleen Rumschlag, Phillip Terveer, and Carolyn Hakes. A Prayer Service is 9:20 a.m. Monday, July 30, 2018, at Haggard-Sefton-Hirschy Zelt Funeral Home, followed by a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church. Father David Ruppert will be officiating. Visitation is from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, July 29, 2018, at the funeral home, with a reciting of the Holy Rosary at 6 p.m. Knights of Columbus 4th Degree Honor Guard will post from 2 to 4 p.m.
