Funeral Services Were Friday for George Wederquist

George Clarence Wederquist, son of Ludwig and Charlotte Johnson Wederquist, was born at Geneseo, Illinois, on April 8, 1883, at the Lutheran Church in Geneseo, and passed away on October 31, 1967 in Glenwood,

At an early age, George came with his parents to the Essex community, later making their home in Hastings where he entered school. He completed his formal education at the Sunbeam School near Clark Station where the family then lived.

The Ludwig Wederquist family consisted of nine children. One brother, Ray, of Longmont, Colorado, survives.

Early in his life, George began learning what was to be his life's work, farming. On January 31, 1907, George was married to Alpha Alberts. They embarked upon their farming career on the Buffington place south of the present Wederquist farm. Here their oldest daughter, Rheba Katherine, was born. They then moved to the Strahan vicinity where their son, Ralph joined the family. When he was a few months old, they moved to the farm west of Malvern. Here their youngest daughter, Rachel Charlotte was born.

George has made his home on the farm west of Malvern for fifty-five years. First with his wife and family and upon Alpha's death in 1950, with his daughter and son-in-law, the George Mort family. Failing health two years ago required him to go the the Rest Home in Glenwood.

During the years spent in the vicinity Mr. Wederquist took an active part in community life. He served several terms on the Mount Vernon school board and as a Center Township trustee.

Those who survive are, one brother, Ray; his three children; Mr. and Mrs. Charles (Rheba) Raine of Downey, California; Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Wederquist of Ottumwa and Mr. and Mrs. George (Charlotte) Mort of Malvern, five grandchildren; Donald Raine, Whittier, California; Eugene Raine, and Patricia Raine Clark, Downey, California, Chelly and Drucilla Mort, Malvern; 6 great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, and other relatives also remain.

Pall bearers were Lawrence Alberts, Maurice Alberts, Max Vinton, Royce Wederquist, Dwight Wederquist, Ernest Wederquist and Glen Buhr. Caring for the flowers were Dorothy Alberts, Eleanor Wederquist, Helena Alberts and Marjorie Alberts.

Music was furnished by William Gilbert, organist, and Henry Schnoor the soloist, who sang "In the Garden" and "Beyond the Sunset." Hulda Wilson was at the registry book.

Funeral services were held Friday, November 3, at 2 p.m. at Mansfield Funeral Home, the Rev. Hugh Shiveley, officiant.
