Herbert Philipsborn (Sr.) describes Maximilian's early business career: "Father probably came to U.S.A. about 1881. Worked in Hoboken a few months as a longshoreman to get fare to Chicago as he had lost his money over the side of the ship.
In Chicago made bow ties, mounted on cards; sale price 10-25c. Firm, Londoner & Philipsborn. Sent for Mother [Clara], girls [Elsa and Gretchen], Regina [Clara's mother] and Henry - Mother's younger brother. Left that firm to work for F. Siegel & Bros., N[orth]W[est] C[orner] Wells & Adams. Sold coats and suits in the copper country - Houghton, Hancock, etc. Wore a silk hat and Prince Albert coat. After a few years he turned his territory over to his brother-in-law, Henry Gattman.
Fred Siegel financed Father's first store at the S[outh]W[est][C]orner of State & Adams, 'The Grand Cloak Co.' Father had a partner, Mr. Basch. Sold out to him and opened M. Philipsborn & Co. where Kresge now is - 139 S. State Street. From then on he opened "The Model" on the west side of State Street, the "Paris Fashion" near Monroe Street. In addition, on the east side of State Street, the David Martin a high priced shop on the 2nd floor, managed by Walter Schiff..."
