Atherton, July 13 - S.J. Varnhagen, 67, head of a San Francisco clothing manufacturing firm, died last night, apparently from a stroke suffered while he was swimming in the pool of his home at 177 Tuscaloosa avenue.
Police Chief Leroy Hubbard said Varnhagen was swimming in the pool talking to his wife Helen. Mrs Varnhagen told officers she went into the house for a moment and returned to find her husband lying face down in the pool. She pulled him from the water and summoned the family physician, who administered a stimulant and managed to revive Varnhagen. However, the manufacturer died a few moments later as he was beling placed in an ambulance.
Varnhagen had headed the G.W. Reynolds company in San Francisco since 1915. He and his wife had moved to their two-acre estate in Atherton eight years ago. He was a member of Fidelity lodge, F.&A.M., in San Francisco.
Surviving him are his widow; two sons, Peter Varnhagen, of San Mateo, and Stephen Varnhagen, of San Francisco. both of who were associated with their father in the Reynolds company; and two grand children, Patricia and Karen Varnhagen.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow at the Home of Peace cemetery, Colma, with Cantor Rubin Rinder of Temple Emanuel, San Francisco, officiating. Interment will follow, under direction of the Roller & Hapgood chapel, Palo Alto.

Redwood City, Sept 29--Siegfried J. Varnhagen, San Francisco dress manufacturer and Atherton resident, left an estate valued at $214,580.31, according to an inventory filed with County Clerk John A. Bruning.
Varnhagen, who lived at 177 Tuscaloosa avenue, died July 12, 1954. The estate inventory was filed by James A. Lee, state inheritance tax appraiser.
Bulk of the estate was a 40 percent interest in the G. W. Reynolds company of San Francisco, valued at $155,026.74.
