BRIAN CHARLES RAINE
October 20, 1956 December 6, 1998
Brian was born his grandmother's birthday at Downey Community Hospital which was then on 5th Street in Downey. He went to Jordan Elementary school in Whittier, Starbuck Jr. High and graduated from Lowell High School where lie won the Los Campadres award in the field of science and math.
Brian was an all-around young man, playing catcher on the Leffingwell Majors Little League Team that won the Whittier City Championship in 1968. He was a member of the Boy Scouts at Friends Church in Whittier and had a great scout master that taught the boys to hike and how to survive in the outdoors. He loved to hike the John Muir Trail and the family's summer in the High Sierras was his favorite
Brian played high school football and baseball and was an accomplished hunter and fisherman. When lie was only 16, he worked at the Big 5 Sporting Goods store and knew more about the guns in the store, but could not sell them because of his age. He took his pay and bought his first side-by-side, then he and his dad went dove and duck hunting every weekend down in the Imperial Valley, Blythe, Holtville and wherever the hunting was good.
Brian continued his studies at UC Irvine in the field of Chemistry and upon graduation he accepted a scholarship at the University of Illinois Graduate School. While there, he taught freshman chemistry, but was more interested in being with Gwen Pittman, who was at UC Berkeley. He transferred to the Doctorate program in Chemistry at Berkeley and they were married in the early 1980's. They had a precious little baby girl, Kristen, who now lives in Portland, Oregon with her mother
After graduating from Berkley Brian worked for Hewlett Packard, selling testing equipment. It was a high stress job and in 1990 he had a serious brain operation from which lie never recovered, People seek a good education and develop their talents and potential for a lifetime of fruitful work but. accidents, illness and circumstances short circuit well deserved accomplishments. As we pause to honor Brian's memory, we highlight his achievements and pay tribute to loving family and friends who saw to his welfare.
Brian is survived by his beautiful daughter, Kristen, who will be a living memorial to her father. His mother and father, Jan and Don Raine, of Whittier, California kept a constant watch on him and saw to his comfort and safety. Brian has a sister, Ellen Burkhart, of Orinda, California and his grandfather, Charles Raine and an aunt, Patricia Clark, live in Downey. He has an uncle, Gene Raine, of Huntington Beach. God brought Brian into the world on his grandmother's birthday and took him to the house not made with hands eternal in the heavens on his grandfather's birthday.
Brian was very kind and a trusting man who never had a bad word to say about anyone. The poem used in conclusion of this memorial expresses Brian's freedom to hike the vistas never hiked before. The aged Simeon in the temple took the little baby Jesus in his arms and blessed him and turned to his mother Mary and said, "A sword shall pierce your soul also". The Pieta in St. Peter's Cathedral depicts a mother sorrowing over the death of her son. It is often the son who places the mother in the final resting place, but sometimes the roles are reversed and piercing sorrow comes upon the parents.
May you be at peace as Brian is now and shall be for the endless ages of eternity. The death of Jesus at age 33 was a tragic event, but it made all of our deaths tolerable because it brings us hope.
May the peace and joy of Christmas
That Christ alone can impart
Be yours in this time of sorrow
And dwell eternally ill Your heart.
