Notizen zu dieser Person

Evidence is that this family is not part of the Tartasky family. Elliott Tarson, son of Isadore (Tartasky) Tarson, listed his grandparents at the Ellis Island Wall of Immigrants as Samuel and Minnie Tartorsky. The 1908 Chicago City Directory lists the following men named Tartarsky as living at 162 Laflin: Isaac, Morris, Samuel, Simon. The 1910 census lists the family name as Tartasky. According to Elliott Tarson, the family name was not originally Tartasky but was changed "to avoid the draft (in Russia)." Czarist law stated that Jewish males who were not the eldest son of the family were to be drafted into the army for 25 years at age 8. To avoid this conscription, Jews would give their younger sons the surnames of neighbors who has no male children, telling the authorities the child was the eldest "only" son of the neighbor.
