<p><span style="color: #404041; font-family: 'Open Sans'; font-size: 15px;">Olive (Hirth) McLaughlin, 87, of New Britain, loving wife of the late Harold J. McLaughlin whom she now joins in the presence of the Lord died peacefully Monday, (January 28, 2002) at a local health care facility. Born in Rockville, she is the daughter of the late Frederick and Clara (Otto) Hirth. She has lived in Newington and Rockville for many years but has most recently resided in New Britain for the past few years. She was a retired teller with the former United Bank & Trust after many years of service. She was a member of Union Congregational Church, Rockville for many years. She is survived by a son, Conrad Ekstrom and his wife, Kim of Newington; two daughters, Carol Wood of Kensington and Gloria Fischerof North Carolina; a brother, Warren Hirth of Ellington; three sisters, Mildred Weber, Hazel Miffitt, and Elaine Miller, all of Rockville; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three brothers, Harold, Clarence, and Russell Hirth; and two sisters, Naomi Moon and Mabel Bateman. </span></p>

From 1937 to 1940, payments were made in one-lump sums amounts with the first amount being seventeen cents. Following amendments in 1939, the payments turned into monthly benefits and increased. Following further amendments in 1950, cost-of-living increases were awarded to those who were receiving benefits. From 1950 to the present, benefits have increased yearly in response to inflation concerning the costs of living. | |
