PIORKOWSKI, Lt. Col. Casimir J. Lt. Col. Casimir J. Piorkowski (Ret.), 87,of Park Ave., Derby, beloved husband of 63 years of Mary Worobel Piorkowski, died Monday, (July 24, 2006) in his home. Born in Shelton on July 23, 1919, he was the son of the late Joseph and and MaryFura Piorkowski. Lt. Col. Piorkowski attended the local Shelton Schools and attended St. John Kanty College of Erie, PA. He graduated from the Flying Cadet School, Victorville, CA as an Officer in theU.S. Army Air Corps. During World War II, Lt. Col. Piorkowski served as a flight instructor in the Cadet Flying School. Post World War II, he then transferred his service into the U.S. Air Force Reserves, retiring from active duty in 1971. Lt.Col. Piorkowski then worked for the B.F. Goodrich Co. of Shelton and together with his brother-in-law, Serge Kowalsky, operated the C&S Machine & Tool Shop of Ansonia for many years. He was amember of the American Legion Post 0016, Shelton; St. Michael's Catholic War Veterans, Russian-American Club of Shelton; Past Commander, The Military Order of the World Wars; Retired Officers, Nathan Hale Chapter; and the Reserve Officers Assoc. He was also a communicant of St. Michael's Church, Derby; served on the Board of Alderman as both a member and as President of the Board; and he was a member of the committee for the Veteran's Community Center, Derby until 2001. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his devoted children, Carol Kowalski and her husband, Carl of Massachusetts, Diane Hamilton and her husband Robert of New York and Dr. Robert Piorkowski of Wethersfield; eight grandchildren and a great-grandchild; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sisters, Bertha Mikelonis, Mary Mlynarski, Helen Horbal, Stephanie Podgorski, Anna Bukowski, Nellie Piorkowski; and brothers, Stanley, Walter, John, Charlie, Edward and the Rev. Joseph Piorkowski.

 Begun in 1935 by the Social Security Act signed into law by FDR, more than thirty million Americans were registered for the economic security sanctions by 1937. From 1937 to 1940, payments were made in one-lump sums amounts with the first amount being seventeen cents. Following amendments in 1939, the payments turned into monthly benefits and increased. Following further amendments in 1950, cost-of-living increases were awarded to those who were receiving benefits. From 1950 to the present, benefits have increased yearly in response to inflation concerning the costs of living.
