The accident occurred at 8:30. Raymond Scace,33, of 1287 West Street, a neighbor of Mrs. Morrow and a cousin of Miss Crosier, was the operator of thefatal car. He was arrested and in district court this morning pleased not guilty to charges of operating negligently so as to endanger. The case was continued until Friday for hearing. The fatality brought Pittsfield's auto death total to two for 1936. In addition to the death accidents there have been many mishaps in which eight or nine persons have been injured already this year. The Scacecar was travelling easterly toward the city when the accident occurred. According to Scace's report to the police he saw two women walking on the right side of the road with their backs to his approaching car and also saw two other automobiles traveling toward the machine. He said he was going about 30 miles an hour as he came over the crest of Valentine Hill and that after seeing the cars he applied his brakes. His car swerved to the left striking the automobile of Harold R. Leavenworth, 30 Churchill Street. Scace said his car then swerved sharply to the right, striking the two women. Adrian Comper of 939 West Street, operator of the second westerly bound machine, halted his car and the women were taken to the House of Mercy Hospital by him. Mrs. Morrow was dead upon arrival at thehospital. Dr. N.N. Copeland attended Miss Crosier who suffered bruises and contusions as well as shock. Dr. Albert C. England viewed the body of Mrs. Morrow and said she died from a fractured skull. The body rests at the Wellington & Crosier Funeral Home, 220 East Street. Funeral services will be conducted there at 3:30 tomorrow afternoon. The Rev. Russell B. Richardson of the South Congregational Church will officiate. Burial will be in Pittsfield Cemetery. The bearers will be Harding W. Whitney and John E. McMahon of the Berkshire Woolen Company, Charles W. Dewey and David W. Retallick of the Eastern Star and Charles H. Brown and Martin O. Vanderburgh of the Pittsfield Grange. Mrs. Morrow was born at Shelburne Falls, May 29, 1880, daughter of Joseph and Alice Russell. She was graduated from the Shelburne Falls High School, Arms Academy and from Bishop Memorial Training School for Nurses here in 1904. She practiced until her marriage in September 1907 to Mr. Morrow who was a partner of Frank Howard in the agricultural supply company of Howard & Morrow. After her husband's death, Mrs. Morrow resumed her nursing and for the last four years had been the nurse for the Berkshire Woolen Company. She had been accustomed to walk into town from her home, which is about 3 1/2 miles in the suburbs, and had often been accompanied by Miss Crosier. They would generally ride home. Mrs. Morrow was a member of South Congregational Church, Pittsfield Grange, Collina Chapter, Eastern Star, and the House of Mercy Hospital Alumnae Association. She leaves a son, John Russell Morrow, and her mother, Mrs. Joseph Russell, both of this city. The accident was investigated by Sergeant Camille L. Marcel and Officer Francis Hughes, who placed Mr. Scace under arrest. Bail was set at $2000 and furnished by George E. Musgrove, 936 West Street. Chief John L. Sullivan who talked with Scace after his arrest, said that the car was being driven too fast for conditions. He said that 30 miles an hour on a highway that is icy is entirely too dangerous.
