Often a marriage license will also contain information about the parents ofthe bride and groom including the parents’ names and birthplaces. Copies of the original marriage records in New York City are available for order for a fee from the Office of the City Clerk. Marriages 50 or more years old are classified as public documents and are available to all researchers. Marriages less than 50 years old are restricted and only available under certain circumstances that are outlined at the webpage linked to above.

From 1937 to 1940, payments were made in one-lump sums amounts with the first amount being seventeen cents. Following amendments in 1939, the payments turned into monthly benefits and increased. Following further amendments in 1950, cost-of-living increases were awarded to those who were receiving benefits. From 1950 to the present, benefits have increased yearly in response to inflation concerning the costs of living.
