Son of George Kappele, K.C., and of K. R. Kappele, of 235, Lonsmount Drive, Forest Hill, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Lieutenant Ernest Reece Kappele was born in Toronto, Ontario on June 25, 1893, the son of George Kappele, K.C., and Kate Reece Kappele, of 235 Lonsmount Drive, Forest Hill, Toronto, Ontario. He was the brother of Lieutenant George Reece Kappele who also died in the First World War.
Ernest attended Rosedale Public School, Toronto, followed by St. Andrew's College from 1903 to 1910, University College (University of Toronto) from 1910 to 1912 where he was a Kappa Alpha, and finally Osgoode Hall Law School (see memorial below).
He was a "student at law" when he enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary force on July 22, 1915 and claimed previous service with the 9th Mississauga Horse. He went overseas with the 75th Battalion, Central Ontario Regiment in March 1916. He served with the battalion in France though the summer and autumn of 1916 on the St. Eloi and Somme fronts. In January 1917 owing to ill health, he was given lighter work on the Staff of the 3rd Brigade, but returned to his battalion to command of his former company in March.
He was instantly killed at the age of 24 years, by a shell as he was leading his men into action at Vimy Ridge on the first day of the attack - April 9th, 1917. Ernest is buried in the Canadian Cemetery No. 2, in France (Grave Reference: 1.A.6.)
