From early age on Otto Straub III. wanted to become a farmer. After finishing his compulsory school term in Gossau/SG he went to learn farming with the Kessler family in Gossau-Brühwil. From 1950 till 1958 he expanded his knowledge with other farmers and additional training.
In the summer of 1958 he emmigrated to Wisconsin to work with the Swiss farmer Reinhard, who was one of the sons of pastor Reinhard from Brüttisellen, known to Otto's mother. After a short time he purchased a small farm. Late 1959 he sold his property, made with his car a trip down to California, back to New York and returned home in order to avoid the draft.
Two years later he left his home country once more and found some employment in Southern California as farm worker in the Imperial Valley and later with the Hofer (a Swiss) milk farm not far from San Diego. After marriage Otto and Käthy moved to Hubbard/OR where they purchased their own farm and rised their children. At the age of 60 Otto had enough of milking cows and working 365 days of the year and moved to Buhl/ID to plant corn and alfalfa.
