Ludwig I. der Gute von Bourbon wurde 1428 Graf von Clermont-en-Auvergne und von Sancerre, Dauphin von Auvergne, Seigneur von Mercour und Combrailles, 1434 Graf von Montpensier. Er ging mit den herzoglichen Vettern zusammen, hinter denen er etwas zurückstand, besaß gute diplomatische Fähigkeiten und war stark geprägt von den spätmittelalterlichen Ritteridealen. Er stand weitgehend auf königlicher Seite und wurde 1484 durch den herzoglichen Vetter Gesandter in Rom.
