Notes for this person
Adam Hepburne, Master of Hailes, afterwards styled of Dunsyre [in Lanarkshire], was not of an age to marry in 1448. He is believed to have intrigued with the widowed Queen Marie of Gueldres, a young and beautiful woman. He atached himself to the party of the Boyds, and was concerned in the seizure of Kg. James II at Linlithgow on 9th July 1466, for which he obtained a remission from Parliament dated 13th October in the same year. He was Sheriff of Berwick on 7th April 1467. He died in or before 1479, before his father. "... the second Lord, who married the eldest daughter of the first Lord Home, was by no means a pattern of loyalty and obedience to the law; and, in alliance with ihs kinsmen, the Homes, took his share in the broils and feuds which disturbed the peace of the country in the unfortunate reign of James III. The minor branches of teh Hepburn family had by this time spread themselves through East Lothian and Berwickshire, and some of them, such asthe Hepburns of Waughton and Whitsome, had become powerful."
