Johann Gottfried SCHOLZ

JOHANN GOTTFRIED SCHOLZ Junior was born at Light Pass on4thMarch, 1848. After spending his childhood days at Light Pass,hemoved to Jindera with his parents in 1866. The farmoriginallyconsisted of 3 20 acres, but was later increased to750. He grewcereal crops on 200 acres, using the rest forgrazing purposes,for cattle and sheep. He was a breeder of allfarm stock. Heowned a draught stallion an d several brood maresfrom which manyclydsdales were bred. He was a successfulexhibitor at shows.The story is told that one year he took bothfirst and secondprize at the Albury show. He was curiou s toknow why the judgepreferred one horse to the other, so he askedhim. The judge notrealising that Gottfried owned both entries,retorted, "Oh, Ican't please everybody!" Besides the above, heha d a dairymilking fifteen cows, an orchard for one and a halfacres, and avineyard with one acre under vines. He was a goodsupporter ofhis church and took a part in community affairs. Fora time hewa s president of the Jindera Farmers' Union. Aftersetting uphis sons on various farms, he moved from Hawthornwhich wastaken over by his fourth son. About 1905-1908 he boughtthepropery Waterview on th e Howlong Road, which became a verywellknow property. A grandson remembers him as a "verypurposefulman, a man of progressive vision, a man of his word".Importantpeople were frequent callers at hi s well known horsestud. Whenthey were invited for the usual cup of tea, Gottfriedwould gethis young grandson to sing for them all. Thecommunityspiritedness of Gottfried carried over to one child inparticular, his daughter Bertha (Mrs. Padman), whosehusbandbecame a member of the N.S.W. Legislative assemblyandrepresented Albury for 18 years. While her husband was mayorofAlbury from 1939 to 194 6, she actively assisted him asmayoressengaging in many community and service activities.Gottfriedmarried Bertha Emilie Kalms, a sister to the wife ofhis olderbrother Eduard. She died on 28th May , 1924 and he onthe 17thOctober, 1934. Both are buried at Jindera. There were13children born of the marriage, six sons and seven daughters.
