BIOGRAPHISCHES: seit 1476 Studium in Löwen, 1491 D. theol., 1493 Professor der Theologie, Kanzler und mehrfach Rektor der Universität Löwen, 1507 von Kaiser Maximilian I. zum Erzieher seines Enkels, des späteren Kaisers Karls V., berufen, 1516 Bischof von Tortosa und Generalinquisitor für Aragonien und Navarra, 1518 auch für Léon und Kastilien, 1517 Kardinal, Regent des Königreichs Spanien und am 9. 1. 1522 zum Pabst gewählt als Nachfolger Leos X.
