Notes for this person
It is said that General Lewis had a head full of red hair. General Hensley and family showed up in the 1900 Census of Benton Co. He was 39 years old, and had been married to Mary J. McDonald for 20 years. It also said that she had 8 children, with 7 still living. The census also states that Cornelius was the only one that could read and write. General Lewis was renting his farm, also. Laura and General G. had 4 mos. of schooling.Found General in the 1910 census of Humphreys Co., Married to Zana Miller, with his daughter Sarah at 14 years old, and a granddaughter Dollie ? On July 24th, 1997, I got back an answer from the Tn. State Library and Archives in Nashville regarding a death record on General, and they could not find any record of his death. On August 7th, 1998, I made another trip to Camden, Benton Co., Tn. to make another effort to find anything I could on the death of Mary J. and General Lewis. I searched the 1908 Camden Chronicle on microfilm without any luck. The Librarian there was very helpful, and put me in contact with a Mr. Cain, who is with the Benton County Genealogical Society. He said that he remembered General Lewis's name (he has written a couple books), but can't remember where. I gave him my name and phone number to call if he could find anything. He looked up the 1900 Census on them, and stated that they lived in Eagle Creek when the Census was taken, and bet that Mary J. was buried in Dry Branch. The problem is that the Cemetery has 75 unmarked graves there, and she's not listed as being buried there in the marked graves.
