Birth: Jan., 1827 Hickman County Tennessee, USA Death: Sep. 12, 1900 Hickman County Tennessee, USA Son of Larkin Fain Hensley & Margaret (Hinson) Hensley. Married Hannah Boyce(Cobb) Wheat, 29 Mar 1854, Hickman Co., TN. They were the parents of nine children; --------------------------------- From Family History notes written by grandson,George Audley Hensley:".... George Hensley spent most of his young life in Lewis County but when the war broke out between the states his sympathy was with the North. He joined a group of soldiers who were fighting for the North but were not a part of the Union Army. Sometime later he was captured by the Confederates but managed to escape and made his way back to the Union Army where he enlisted and fought the rest of the war. During the war his eyes began to fail and, because of exposure and loss of sleep, they were in such bad condition he became totally blind not long after reaching home after the end of the war. He received his discharge which was written out by a Negro in St. Louis, Missouri in August 1865. At that time his home was in Wayne County. Some years later a bill was passed making all soldiers who were disable in the service of their county eligible for pension. Like everyone else at the time of his discharge, George had been thinking only of getting to his family and home. He had accepted his discharge without any note of disability at that time thus making it very difficult to prove his right to the pension. Ater more than twenty five years he was able to contact the man who had been Captain of his company during the war. By this time, the Captain had moved to California and became an attorney. This man put George in touch with some of his old buddies who were able to testify that his eyesight was almost gone at the close of the war. He established his claim for pension in 1892 and it became retroactive to the close of the war. His first check was for more than twelve thousand dollars which was an enormous sum of money to come to Cane Creek at that time. After receiving the pension, the family purchased the Joe Sutton place which is now owned by Carlyle Breece. On this place at that time was a small mercantile business which was operated for a few years by Polk Higgins under the name of "Hensley and Higgins". Since none of the family was interested in running the store it was soon closed out. Soon ater moving to the Sutton place, my grandfather contracted with the McClanahan`s of Centerville to build the big house which is still standing. This must have seemed like a mansion to the family who had spent all their lives in log cabins. All the years before my grandfather had been able to obtain his pension had been very hard times for the family. My grandmother worked at anything she could find to make a little money. In the spring of the year, she could always pick up a few dollars by digging ginseng and in the fall, there were always peanuts to be picked, as the farmers raised peanuts at that time. The first land owned by the family was a tract of about fifteen acres on Dry Creek which cost the sum of ten dollars. This money was earned by picking peanuts. A log house on this plot of ground was the family home at the time the Sutton Place was bought...
