See picture in James Monroe's scrapbook. See source for information regarding Spence family from book written by Polly Spence. On page 61 she talks about Don and Shep. A copy of Don's birth certificate, passport and death certificate can be found in a book entitled "The McBrides - Historical Documents, Notes, & Miscellaneous Materials" compiled by Carolyn McBride Brown and printed by Donald Keith McBride in 1995 (limited circulation). Don's birth date and death date are taken from those copies. The death certificate shows he died of Intracerebral hemorrhage. Carolyn notes that on 6/15/78 he drove to Ft. Wayne and there was a birthday party that evening. He fell down the stairs at Carolyn's home in Ft. Wayne about 11:00 a.m. on the 16th. He was in a coma until his death. The body was viewed 7-9 p.m. on 28th and burial was 10 a.m. on 29th with memorial serivice afterwards. The collection of documents also includes many photographs. His sister Betty Maxine states that he graduated from Cowles High School, went to the University of Nebraska where he took his degree in civil engineering; however, there is some doubt as to whether he acutally graduated. Worked for state of Oklahoma as chairman of the Water Resources Division of the Planning Commission. Moved to Washington, D.C. in September of 1946 in the capacity of Secretary/Manager of the National Reclamation Association. Became aide to the former governor Robert S. Kerr (OK) when he became a senator and served as his legislative assistant. After Kerr's death, he worked with senator Mike Maroney. However, his salary was paid by the Wachita/Arkansas/Red River Basin Association until his appointment by Lyndon B. Johnson (announced on May 18, 1966) as one of three directors of the Tennessee Valley Authority. He served 9 years and retired in 1975. He was always and active church member, having served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher and member of numerous committees. In his retirement, he cultivated roses. The following was apparently a press release upon his retirement in June, 1974: DON McBRIDE Director, Tennessee Valley Authority Don McBride became a member of the TVA Board of Directors on May 20, 1966, following more than 30 years of public service with Federal and state organizations. His primary experience has been in the field of water resource development. Mr. McBride was active in studies which led to the 1961 report pre- pared by the Select Committee on National Water Resources--a report considered to be one of the most complete works ever issued on water resource development in this country. In 1949 he helped prepare the United States Senate report on the comprehensive development of the Arkansas, White, and Red River basins. He also assisted in preparation of the TVA self-financing legislation passed by Congress in 1959. At the time of his appointment to the TVA Board by President Johnson, Mr. McBride was a special assistant on the staff of Senator A. S. (Mike) Monroney. He served from 1950-63 as principal advisor and consultant on water resources legislation to the late Senator Robert S. Kerr. In the post-war years, 1946-49, he was Secretary-Manager of the National Reclamation Association. Following positions with various private companies and state agencies concerned with the design and construction of power transmission lines and irrigation projects in 1939 Mr. McBride was appointed chief engineer and later a director of the Oklahoma Planning and Resources Board, with responsibility for administration of the state's water rights. He became chairman of the Planning and Resources Board in 1944. During his two-year term as chairman, he formulated a plan of revenue bond financing to develop the Oklahoma state park system--a plan which is still in use. Mr. McBride was born June 1,1903, in Cowles, Nebraska. He attended engineering school at the University of Nebraska and is a registered professional engineer in Oklahoma. He is the author of numerous publications on the subject of water resource development. In 1964, Mr. McBride was honored by the Arkansas Association for his efforts in the development of the Arkansas River. He has received similar awards from organizations in Oklahoma and, in 1962, was named to the Engineering Hall of Fame, Oklahoma State University, "for integrity, leadership, and meritorious service to the profession of engineering." McBride received the Army Distinguished Civilian Service Award. Mr. McBride is a member of the Baptist Church. He is married to the former Mary Lou Patterson of Tellico Plains, Tennessee. They have three children.
