[Bill's Nutt.FTW] Married near the end of the Civil War, lived first in Ohio but by 1869 they had moved to Illinois. They had seven children. Mattie had beautiful red hair, worn long, which she inherited from her Irish grandfather. Henry and Mattie bought 10 acres of land in Hardin Co., Ill, and Henry felled the trees, hued the timber by hand and built a sturdy 2-room log house on top of a hill. He planted a walnut tree in the front yard and Mattie grew iris and daffodils in the yard. Henry was a miner in the Florspar mines. He walked to and from the mines twice a week to work while Mattie cared for the home, children , garden & farm animals. This was a religious family, attended church regularly and had strong fmaily values. Each of their children were given an education.
