Birth: Aug. 12, 1834 Marshfield Plymouth County Massachusetts, USA Death: Jun. 14, 1913 Whitman Plymouth County Massachusetts, USA Calvin settled in Whitman coming from his hometown of Marshfield. For many years he worked in the shoe factories in town. He served during the Civil War as an Orderly Sergeant with Massachusetts Companny K.He was honorably discharged at Taunton, Bristiol Co., 27 Jun 1864.For many years he was a active member of the David A. Russell Post GAR. He was known as a very congenial person. The following obituary appreared in the Brockton Enterprise: "Another of the comrades of the David A. Russell Post G.A.R. was mustered out Saturday, answering to the last roll call at the noon hour. While his health has failed the past few weeks, yet he was able to be about each day and on Friday spent several hours caring for his estate. The end came suddenly a few minutes after being taken ill. He leaves a family to whom he was devoted: a wife, four daughters, Mrs. Ella E. Loud, Mrs. Charles H. Cobb of Forrestdale, Mrs. S. Herbert Norton, and Miss Grace R. Porter, and two sons, Fred L. Porter of Avon and Alvin C. Porter. A sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Ford, also survives him, the last of a family of ten children. Mr. Porter was engaged in the shoe factories and retired some few years ago to enjoy a well deserved rest. When the late Col. F.P. Harlow, then Capt. Harlow, enlisted his company of Abington men, Mr. Porter was enrolled and went to the front as a member of Company K, 7th regiment. This regiment became known as one of the fightenest regiments of the union, and was led into many battles by the brave Col. Harlow. in 1862, Mr. Porter was promoted to the rank of Orderly Sergeant, a position he held when his three year term of enlistmentended. He joined the Grand Army Post in 1869 and has been one of its most faithful members."
