Birth: 1844 Indiana, USA Death: Jan., 1913 Kansas, USA Walter Scott Challis was born to Samuel Humphrey Challis and Elizabeth Payne Searing in 1843. He was the 6th of seven children. His older brother was Alavah Payne Challis who was a pioneer in Idaho and a wealthy miner. Walter served in the Civil War from 1862 to 1865 in Company G in the 71st Indiana Infantry regiment and Company G in the 6th Cavalry Regiment. After his service he settled in the Kansas frontier. Walter married Oxana Hiatt on 6 August 1868 in Douglas County, Kansas. He and his wife Oaxana had four children Ford Foster Challis, Alvah Payne Challis, Edna Lenore Challis and Harvey Burt Challis. According to the Scranton KS Cyclopedia Walt and Oaxie lived in Scranton, Osage County and Walt served as the Marshal in the 1880's. Topeka State Journal, Jan. 6, 1913, page 3, column 4: Walter S. Challis, 69 years of age, died last night at his home southeast of Topeka. Death was the result of old age and a general breakdown of health during the past year. Mr. Challis was a native of Platt county, Indiana, and a veteran of the Civil war. He is survived by a wife and four children, Mrs. Edna Crow and A.P. Challis of Topeka, Ford Challis of Kansas City and Harvey Challis, who was at home with his parents. The funeral will be held tomorrow. Interment at Twin Mound.
