Married Ben Howard Whitlow, 21 Aug 1964, Hickman Co., TN; parents of two sons, Brian Howard Whitlow & Steven Neal Whitlow. --------------------------- Joan was born in the Farmers Exchange area of Hickman County, TN. When she was age nine her family moved to Kimmins, in Lewis Co. She graduated from Lewis Co. High School as salutatorian of her class. She graduated in 1964 from Austin Peay State University with a major in mathematics, and minors in physics and chemistry. She also got her teaching certificate and taught school for a few years after college. Her husband deserted his family while the boys were still very young, and Joan struggled to raise them alone. She worked for the State of Tennessee Welfare Dept. from 1981 until her retirement in 2007. She was an accomplished genealogist, and spent much time in her retirement years doing research on her family lines. She died at age 71, in her home in Hendersonville, TN, of a massive stroke. She is survived by her sons, Brian Howard Whitlow and Steven Neal Whitlow; grandson, Steven Michael Whitlow and gr-grandaughter, Shelby Fay Whitlow; one brother, Ronald Lynch, of Hohenwald, TN.; special cousin, Joyce Ballentine, of Ethridge, TN. She was cremated, and her ashes will be placed in the Edwards Cemetery in HIckman County, with her parents and baby sister.
